    Need help with Windows/GeforceFX 5200

Hi there, My mate has just phoned because he is unable to get into windows, and I believe it maybe a graphics card problem. He owns a GeforceFX 5200, and this is what happens....

When the computer is first turned on, the "boot up screens" appear as normal, Then the Windows XP proffesional logo appears, and loads windows.

Then suddenly, out of the blue, the monitor goes into the "power saving mode" and turns off.

Can anyone think of any solutions to this problem? He's checked the cable and its all ok, and I fear it might be something to do with his graphics card.

His specs are similar to mine, except he owns a 5200.

Thanks for any help that is received.

PS - He did reformat his C: drive last night (through DOS) and it windows loaded up normal, until this morning when it repeated the same problem.

hit f8, boot with standard VGA mode, should load windows fine.. double check the screen resolution and refresh rate (change them even if they seem normal) and reboot... had that happen on my brothers computer for no reason at all.. just got windows and the screen just went blank...

    hope that helps

Hi there, Thanks for the help but he's still kind of experiancing difficulty's with it.

He can get into VGA mode, but the screen resolution is set to 640x480 with 8 bit color, upon attempting to change the resolution, the same problem occurs: - monitor goes blank, and turns off.

    Any ideas?

Sounds like a driver issue. When he formatted, it sounded as if everything was OK after the first reboot. Try another revision of the NVIDIA drivers, or have you tried the current ones?

ake sure the monitor settings file/driver youve got loaded is the right one for your monitor, that wil stop you chosing resultions and refresh rates your monitor and gfx might not support.
if you dont do that some games / programs will change res to the one they prefer (as all of them will be in the supported list) which could have caused the problem

Ok, thanks for the help so far people, he seems to have got it sorted at the moment, he uninstalled the graphics drivers in safe mode, and installed the nVidea drivers off the disc, and it seems to be alright....for the moment anyway.

I told him to update to the newest driver revision and we're gonna see what happens.
