    FYI..Gainward 8500GT SilentFX

Just in case anyone is considering this card or similar for a media pc etc..

It runs around 45 degrees Idle and around 50 doing anything 3D. However, the modest heat that that is, itdoesn't seem to affect much around it. I'll be running a PCI card in the slot next to it to work this out later.

It's double width so won't fit some uATX cases.

Other than that it's business as usual.

Looks very nice, good build quality and as cheap as any other 8500's. £60 off Komplett.

It's peaked at 55 degrees but seems to be bedding in and getting lower now.

Sounds good - i am twitching between 8500GT and 8600GT for my media PC, and am looking out for a quiet card, but the shuttle i bought can only use a single slot - having trouble deciding - if only i could fit that card in - maybe i could mod my case a bit

And I wish Ati would bring out a competitor to the low-mid range!

The leadtek 8500gt doesn't seem to use the reference fan etc..

I couldn't tell you whether it's quiet or not but that's the only other one I was considering.

    staffsMike,
Partly on the strength of your figures for this card, I bought one a couple of weeks ago. I agree that's it's a very nice card and I have no complaints about it, but my temperatures are consistently higher. At present I'm seeing
    Room temp: 22C
    GPU ide: 56-58C
GPU loaded (nVidia stress test): 63-65C
That's with 2 Noctua 120mm 1200RPM case fans (one intake, 1 exhaust) running at low speed

These GPU temperatures are in no way a problem, but I'm still curious about the cooling arrangements of your PC, in case I can learn something.

Mine took a few days to settle in. It's initial tempreatures were very similar to your own.

The room it's in now is warmer than mine and it sits in the low 50's.I tried mounting various fan positions blowing air directly over it/on it etc..(120mm's)
and it pretty much doesn't change the temps at all..maybe 1 degree lower.

Maybe it was just lucky or maybe look again in a few days.

No idea about that one. Do you mean its actually hot (like ouch hot) to the touch. the outer heatsink on mine doesn't feel all that hot which is why putting a fan over it doesn't change much.

yes is very hot ,ouch, and with open case of course.I have installed the original drivers( i have not yet tryed the nvidia standard drivers...). I have no case coolers...
By the way, when i've put a 8cm fan under the board ,the temperature dropped down to 53 degree less then a minute.

With this card I saw temperatures around 70C idle when I first installed the card with no case fan. I think the passive cooling only works when there is a good air circulation through the vase. Otherwise the hot air just stays in place around the heatsink. The open case may not help - it seems you need the airflow from at least one case fan (blowing out).

I never worry about temps in my HTPC - as these components are all tested to near 100 degrees afaik - silence is key for me, not heat.......

If anyone is feeling brave they could try the new leadtek instead

Double width again but it doubles behind the card.
