So what's the next "big thing" in desktop graphics?

I used to follow this like a bloodhound for a number of years; I always made sure that whenever I upgraded my system I'd have had my ear to the ground ready to pounce on a new graphics card as soon as it was out on the streets. I gave up on all this after my last purchase in 2006 (a Radeon X1900XTX) when I saw the trend for multi-GPU systems and yet another CPU socket type in the works, and decided to quit the arms race.

Now I'm planning on buying a Mac Pro, and although I know 'standard' graphics cards aren't supported in these, there are hacks out there that'll work with them. The question I have is, what's the next big thing around the corner for us? As I understand it a GeForce 8800 Ultra is about the bees knees today, but is there something big from either the green or red corner waiting to pounce upon us?

Theres talk of them removing the standard 1 GPU per card and moving to clustering where there are lots of smaller modular GPUs that work on specific tasks.

This is reported from theinquirer so who knows if its true or not. Only time, AMD and Nvidia will tell.
