What the Hell is "HV Frequency Over Range"

After cleaning up the wiring in my case, I went to turn on my PC and everything booted fine, but my temps were sky high. Taking off the side panel revealed that I forgot to plug in the case fans to the fan controller. I turn off the computer, plug everything back in, boot up and I get a weird series of beeps. Curse a blue streak, clear CMOS, boot up again. Sounds like it boots normally, but I get an error message on my screen saying "HV Frequency Over Range". I can't even enter safe mode as it happens on the post screen. My specs are as follows:

Viewsonic P75F+B
Radeon AIW 9800 Pro
Abit NF7-S Rev 2
Barton 2500+ @ 3200+ (1.72 volts)
1 gig Kingston Hyper X PC 3500 Ram
SB Audigy 2
120gig SATA Maxtor

Your monitor is either receiving or thinks it's receiving a signal that is outside its frequency range.

With your description of events, sounds like you may well have fried that AIW 9800

Can you see the post screen then? If so, I wouldn't thought it was a problem with the graphics card. If it was, then you wouldn't see any output from the PC at all, would you?

Ahh, then it probably is your graphics card. Either that or there's a problem with your monitor?

Try both seperately in another PC if you can to try and determine which one the problem is.

Ok just a thought, bear with me. Now if my video card was fried (and I'm not really sure how that would happen, as I was careful about static discharge and rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbish) i would think all that would happen is that I would get a blank screen. Nothing showing at all. However when I turn on my computer, it goes through the normal beeps, and then the monitor comes out of standby. That to me means that the video card is sending it a signal.... right? However either the monitor is gone (thank god cuz that would be through no fault of my own) or the video card is sending it a signal it can't handle. The other thing is that the AIW 9800pro uses a DVI to VGA connector. If this somehow wasn't working right, could it be causing my grief? Thanks again boys!

Alright, the saga continues. Went to try my parents 9600pro in my computer. I plug it in, turn it on and the post screen comes up. rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbish, I guess it was my video card. At the bottom of the post screen it says the cpu is unworkable, etc. I go, put all my settings back the way they were, exit bios. I then get an ambulance beeping noise coming from my pc speaker and nothing on the screen. I try clearing CMOS, nothing. Same thing. So seeing as I'm on the verge of throwing my pc out the window, I decided it's time to go and grab lunch and get ready for work. I'll check back in when I get home. PLEASE HELP!!

Try re-seating the Vid Card, had this once myself, worked for me

Resetted the CMOS?

Or try 'Force hardware update' (or similar) in the BIOS

Also, you need to remove the power lead from the PSU when you re-set the BIOS, and give it a good minute at least m8.

Holdin down the 'insert' key, and pressing reset sometimes works too. Might need to do it several times, should boot with safe defaults after a few attempts.

If not, ahve you tried your Vid Card in another rig to see if its borked?

Ok, I figured out the problem, thanks guys. It turns out that my fan contoller has to inputs for the PSU. I, in my infinite wisdom, plugged them in together on the same molex connector using a splitter. Once I took it off and plugged each connector into it's own molex it worked fine. I guess it was drawing to much current and didn't have enough to power the video card.

good day to all... i experienced the same (hv frequency over range) problem with the PC I was working on and that's how i landed myself on this forum... i could get in on safe mode but not on normal mode. i've done all suggestions here and what solved mine was the installation of an older driver version, overwriting all files of the earlier graphics driver installation .
