Re: 9600 GT or HD 3850

The classic distinctions between ATi and Nvidia still remain with these cards - ATi are better at fine branching shader operations, while Nvidia have more texture power.

So in the absence of any bigger factor go with what kind of games you play and what their likely demands on the cards will be.

    Think I could power a 3850 with a 500w PSU? I'm a bit fuzzy on the whole PSU/graphics card issue (basically, I haven't a clue)

Something like an Antec Earthwatts 500 or Corsair HX520 (the Corsair being the better option) would take care of it with ease... Take care of pretty much any single-card setup with ease

    I have 450 watt and run a 3850 512..

Go for 3850 512 (it may prove its worth in the longer run)

Re: 9600 GT or HD 3850

I have the sapphire 3850 512mg version with a standard cooler. It is not quiet or cool. If you don't want it to melt a hole in your motherboard (slightly over the top maybe ) you need to manually crank the fan speed up to over 60% and its not silent.

Its does get warm, and in a case with little air movement it will make everything else hot. Not recommened for a small case.

But the 9600gt is not meant to be any better, so go for either but make sure it has a better cooler. Get a 3870 with a reference cooler. Hot air straight out the back....

Is it the same cooler as this one?

Re: 9600 GT or HD 3850

If £100 is you limit, then spend the exta £4 at Ebuyer and get the 3870 (I've got one on order and should arrive this week, so I'll tell you what the cooler is like).

If you can stretch to £118, you can get the PNY 8800GT 512MB from Scan. This would be my choice, but I needed a video card with HDMI output with audio, hence the 3870.

If you are feeling adventerous, you could always try overclockers.co.uk for the older 8800GTS 640MB with the dual slot cooler. Overclockers has a mixed, but not a very good reputation - For £18 I would get the newer 8800GT from scan.

Overclockers.co.uk have a rubbish after sales service record. Quick deliveries though. And they only publish reviews of products on their web site that are good. You will never see a bad review.

    Is the one on overclockers.co.uk 8800gts 640mb faster than the 3870 or 8800gt 512mb ?

Re: 9600 GT or HD 3850

The 640mb can be overclocked to GT and 3870 levels of performance, perhaps slightly lower. I've got one but I wouldn't bother buying one now all these new cards are about. I would have the ATi.
