I will be gaming at the stated resolution. Which of these cards would I see the best performance from in games like WoW, CSS, CS 1.6 and possibly some of the newer games as they come out.

• HD 4850
• HD 4870
• GTX 260
• 9800 GTX+

This will be paired with an E5200(3.2ghz) and 4 gigs of 800 mhz ram.

4850 is cheapest and performs good enough for the resolution, i'd go for that

In those games with that resolution the ati 4850 or the 9800gtx+ should do you fine. In terms of overall performance I think the ati 4850 is a touch better then the 9800gtx+ but don't quote me on that. I'd go with the one you find cheaper.

If you want a bit more future proofing and plan to play some more demanding games then it might not be a bad idea to go for an ati 4870 or gtx 260. In terms of performance once again its a bit like the above, both are very similar but I would say the 4870 is bit touch faster (5% more according to some review sites), but tbh you cant go wrong with either

Well for WoW, CSS, CS 1.6 they are all overkill

A 9800gt 512mb or 4830 512mb would be fine and under £100
However I would consider the 9800gtx+ or 4850 512mb as well, for more demanding games.
Personally speaking a 4870 or gtx260 are overkill for 1680x1050 I've not found anything that really struggles on my 9800gtx (original not +) at 1680x1050

A HD 4850 manages around 30fps at 1680x1050 on GTA IV with moderate settings, everything set to low may push the FPS up to around 50 or more.

If you intend to play GTAIV I would probably go for the ati 4870/GTX 260.

Meh, I would rather try it myself, I don't need to play games at the highest settings. I am all about the gameplay.

Maybe you should get something in preparation that you will need 1920 x 1200 screens in time to come. It might be even faster then you think with the falling prices. I will get a HD4850.

CS:S is more about your CPU than your graphics card to be honest.

GTA IV has bad frame rates even on the consoles. For the other games you listed, you should be able to get a 9800gtx+ for a good price but for extra power go for a 4850 - I have the HIS 4850 IceQ TurboX which is overclocked, but runs cooler and uses less power than the stock card!

My 7300GT 512mb does these games fine in that resolution, so all of them should do.

Been playing as many 'new' games as possible with my new build, including Fallout 3, NFS:Undercover, etc. All on max @ 1680x1050 - its been brilliant, not a single slowdown.

Tell a lie, playing SupCom, and four commanders all exploded at the same time within about 20ft of each other, inside a massive base, that caused a momentary blip
