Why only 4X AGP and not 8X ??

Hi all,

Can't seem to solve this one ?

I have an ASUS P4C800 875 mobo - 8X AGP capable (Sandra also reports this.)

I also have a Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB - This was sold as 8X AGP (Sandra also confirms this)

So when I look in the display settings under the tab "Smartgear" does it force me to run 4X ? There is the option for 8X AGP but when I select it and it tells me to restart it just comes back up 4X ???

I read the help file and apperently Smartgear sets the AGP bus best suited for your system and it can't be forced !!

I am currently only running the drivers that came with the CD (Cat 3.7 I think)
Has anyone else ever heard or had this ? I made this new PC for gaming and i'll be well vexed if the AGP is being throttled back.

to be honest you won't really notice the difference.

but ... try the following...
bios update.
driver update.

then see if problem persists.

It may be the motherboard at fault. Its really not a worry anyway becayse the difference wont be noticeable. Annoying niggle though

think you'll find the agp setting in bios is set to 4X - did this to mine for some reason when I set it up.

This sounds dodgy but it doesn't seem to be there LOL

There is a setting for the AGP voltage - options (1.8,1.7,1.6,1.5) but AGPX8 is 0.8V yes ??

That is probably what is going on yes ? The BIOS doesn't seem to want to let me take the AGP voltage down below 1.5v ??

There seems to selection for AGP bus speed selection.

you change your agp to 8x in your motherboard bios
it should just be agp 8x then either enable or disable its
normally next to fastwrites in the bios
dont mess on with your agp volts or the agp bus leave them well alone

don't touch the volts and the speeds aren't dependant on the voltages. I thought AGP buses voltages were at 1.5v default.

I am however running the shipped version but I would expect that a new 875i board would not have something as standard as that missing (If it hasn't be left out on purpose)

I don't think it should make a massive difference as my 3Dmark 2001 score is 15800 ish which isn't too bad since I havn't even wound the 9800 up yet. Still would be nice to think my new PC was at least running the new standards.

I've got a P4P800 Deluxe and have the same problem. I can't see any option in the BIOS to configure AGP x settings and there's no reference to it in the motherboard manual.

I have the latest BIOS so I guess its just something that you can't configure

Just find it in the BIOs and change it should be fine, although you wont fine a performance increase..i dont runing my ti4200 at 80mhz AGP...

Okay wanna hear something REAL dodgy.

I updated the driver to Cat 4.2 last night.
When I checked the ATI smartgear to see if I could raise the AGP from 4X to 8X I was a tad worried to see that it was at AGP 0X or off.

Is this even possible for a Radeon 9800 that is actually working fine (3Dmark 2001 is returning valves of 15800)

As wilkied said there is no BIOS options for AGP and Smartgear seems to be messing me up something chronic.

Any ideas please ?

I had similar problem with my hercules 9800se AIW. It would only run on 4X. When i changed it via smartgear to 8X and reboot, the machine would crash. I contacted Hercules and they blamed my power supply even though its 400w unit.

I upgraded to ATI 9800XT and 8X was always shown with no system crashes. However that disappeared and now shows 0 after i installed 4.2 drivers.

If it's not one problem its another. Bloody PC's

4X is OK and like they have already said, it will not make that much of a difference to performance.

Hi all,

The quest is over !!! Yes I have 8X AGP running. The problem ........... Intel INF driver for the mobo.
I did install the drivers that came with the ASUS but obviously it wasn't enough.
The answer came from another forum (booooo) someone at extremeoverclocking.com forums who also had a P4C800 had the same problem.

And the results ........... 3DMark 2001 went up to 18138 from 15800 ish. This was a very plesent surprise and I'll just say a MASSIVE thankyou to all who have helped me with questions for my first ever PC build. I'm happy with 18000, gonna get 3Dmark 2003 tonight and run that.
