Odd mark on display

Looking at a Dell panel recently and trying to figure out what it is I am seeing....


About 3" in from the side and about 4" long, there is a mark, it looks like what you would get if some dirty water had dried on the panel but it's not on the surface and you can only see it on very light backgrounds.

Has someone gotten liquid inside it or could it be backlight bleeding?

Sounds exactly like the burn-in mark I have on my old Dell C600 lappy. Not entirely sure how they occur on TFTs rather than CRTs, but I assume it's the backlight damaging the transistor film in some way...

It doesn't sound like backlight bleed, that would show on very dark backgrounds.

It could be "Image persistence" which is usually reversible.
The usual methods suggested are to have the monitor display an all white screen for extended periods, or turn it off for long periods.
The monitor might have a "conditioning" mode built in that is designed to deal with this.

Google "TFT image persistence" and you'll find lots of info on this.

In my experience image persistence tends to show on dark mid tones ie dark gray and not on lighter tones, but it might be worth trying the various methods to see if it improves.

I had some kind of pressure mark on my first Dell 2209wa. It got worse the longer the display was on. IMO it was caused by some component pressing against the back of screen. A replacement was issued after being declared faulty.

Maybe it's just a stain? A fingerprint, haha. Happened to me.
