    5870 Vapor-X.....rip off UK!

Ok, I see OCuK has the 5870 Vapor-X for pre order at a costly sum of £380....where as Newegg in the US has sold stock units for $399 (currently out of stock there).

Now I am by no means a mathematical genuis, but even I know it is not £ per $.....

Why is the UK so expensive for these cards at present? $399 / 1.64 = £243. Where does the additional £136 come from?

Its times like these I feel like grey imports are ftw...

    Re: 5870 Vapor-X.....rip off UK!

The Newegg listing won't include their tax (as it's region dependant), so you won't get it for $399 in the US.

That, and I'd imagine that stock is still zero over here, so companies might as well charge what they like for what will be an in demand card.

    Re: 5870 Vapor-X.....rip off UK!

As long as you find a retailer that ships and are willing to pay the import tax (newegg doesnt, but there are retailers that do) theres nothing to stop you importing yourself of course.

And like the post above says, I expect high demand and very limited supply in the UK are the reason for the high price. If people dont buy it at that price, then it will be reduced, if people are buying it at that price then they obviously think its worth it.

I guess we'll have to see when more retailers have it.

Approx £400 seems to be the magic number for topend gfx cards, apart from "special editions", iirc the 8800gtx was around that when it first came out as is the gtx295.

mmhmm. I was tempted to upgrade but I suspect I'll be leaving it at least until the new year, now. By then hopefully the drivers will be fixed, the prices will have dropped and Sapphire will have fixed Vapor-X to be quieter than the reference card.

    Re: 5870 Vapor-X.....rip off UK!

I have to admit I was fairly unimpressed with the Vapor-X in the Hexus review... I think I might consider an extra £20-30, but not much more than that considering its benefits over the reference.

I own the 4890 version, and it's a good card. There's no way I'm paying a premium for the 5870 when it doesn't show the benefits of the older series.
I'll be waiting for the new year, and hope that NV will be releasing something competitive.

You want to know something really bad, the RRP in dollars for a normal 5870 (not vapor-x, which by the way is kind of pointless to buy as it is NOT QUIETER) is actually equal to about £226! Bombastic profiteering going on here. Think I'll just go for either a 4890 or GTX 285

Whether it would be any good or not I don't know, but TrustedReviews had a brief story (http://www.trustedreviews.com/multim...rices-to-UK/p1) about BundleBox, a firm that will give you a US address that goods can be shipped to, and they will then calculate import tax etc... and forward it on to you.

iirc, they'll even give some sort of warranty but I think the details of that were sketchy.

I'd be interested what the ultimate price of something like a 5870 was. Not sure I'd bother for any one item much cheaper than the £200-300 mark. (though apparently they will collect multiple items and then post all together if you want)

The price is normal, overclockers always charge absurd amounts for new, limited supply items.

It's not just Overclockers, but you notice Overclockers more because they tend to get stuff first.
