VTX ATI Radeon HD 5850... any good?

    Hi,

Forum n00b, so give me a good slap if i'm not abiding to certain etiquette...

I've just purchased the VTX HD 5850 and wondered if anyone had any experience / opinions with this card? Its pretty much the only DX 11 GPU I can afford...

Also, I know manufacturer doesnt make that much difference nowadays. But i've never had anything from VTX before, so wondered if anyone had any thoughts on them as a manufacturer?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

VTX are part of the same company as Powercolor IIRC.

I've had Powercolor before and I've not had any issues with them. The only downside is that warranty is only 1 year with them.

Excellent, thanks for your responses. Didn't know Powercolor were one and the same, that definately helps. I would love to know if anyone has the same card on this forum.

Re: VTX ATI Radeon HD 5850... any good?

I think the VTX is another one of the standard ATI builds made Sapphire and then badged up so there shouldn't be anything different between this and other versions apart from price, box bundle and warranty.
It's the ones with custom cooling solutions that are starting to be announced where i'd be more concerned about previous users experience.
There's an article about the creation of VTX here

My current setup is a pair of Powercolor 3870 PCS and they've been rock solid for the 2 years i've had them.

I'm intending to buy a 5850 to replace them as apart from being old the fans always run at full speed so aren't exactly quiet.
If there's no snazzy quiet custom cooled 5850s (Vapor-X?) available by the end of the month then i'll have to settle for a vanilla one so i'd be interested to know how quiet you find your 5850 compared to what it's replacing.

I bought a VTX 4770 before Xmas, when ebuyer had them on offer. It seems decently built and overclocks like a good un too!

Re: VTX ATI Radeon HD 5850... any good?

I bought a Sapphire 5850 just before xmas, so I can't comment in VTX but I am finding the card to be a very good purchase. It has really improved my gaming performance and besides a few issues with the Catalyst i've had no problems with this card so far.

I'm still waiting on delivery, but as soon as I get it up and running i'll give my verdict. That link says VTX are a brand that use cheaper components for countries with crap economies, which, to be honest, does worry me a little.

A week for delivery? Was it in stock or pre-order?

I ended up getting a Sapphire 5850 when Ebuyer dropped the prices last Fri but i won't get round to installing it till this weekend as i'm going to do a full OS reinstall and move to Windows 7.

Even if VTX usually use cheaper components, it won't be a board built by them so you'll be getting the same as everyone else but with a different sticker
