gtx 295 or gtx 460

as the title been offered a gtx 295 with 3 months guarantee or a new gtx460 for the same money which would you buy and why.
one of my mates says the gtx295 is only dx10 and will be hot and noisy but for raw power its got way more than a gtx 460.

this is gonna be a sidestep or even downgrade from my 5870 but i have been so annoyed with the stupid GSOD it gets that when its fixed am gonna sell it.

Sounds like you have weighed it up quiet well already. What sort of games do you play, do you need fast update for twitch games or do you value eye candy more? Is noise that important?

Looking at the noise graphs on Anandtech, the 295 is indeed loud both idle and on load, but then your current 5870 is probably not exactly ninja stealthy

I have a simple way of deciding this sort of thing. Take a coin, toss it, and heads you buy the 295. Now that is decided, do you feel disappointed at the outcome?? If you feel gutted at the outcome, then the other card is for you!

Honestly, try it. Tossing a coin doesn't always work, but amazing how often it does

Just a note - is it the 768MB GTX460 or the 1GB? That would make a big difference to my answer

Remember that the gtx295 is a dual gpu card, the performance is around the same as the 5870, better in some games, weaker in others. However by better/weaker we're only talking a cople of fps here not enough to notice.

Yes it is only dx10 but is dx11 that important to you? it's also louder and hotter than ether the 5780 or the gtx460
PS for a 24" monitor I would check it's the 1gb gtx460 not the 768mb version

it was HEADS not disappointed i want the 295 but a mate thinks its a bad idea and that i should get the gtx460

dont think dx11 is that important am mostly gonna play borderlands bfbc2 and MW2

I think I'd personally go for the GTX460 - sure, it's not as raw powerful, but it's cooler, quieter, less power hungry, newer, and will cope well enough at 1920x1200 for most recent games. On the other hand, I'm not an eye-candy/max frame rate person and like a balanced PC.

If *you* want the 295 then get the 295 - your mate may think you should get a 460, but he isn't the one who'll be using it every day. It's certainly not a bad idea if you can pick one up for < £200 (which I assume it is if it's going to be about the same price as a 1GB GTX460).

I would want a 460 because noise & heat is really really important to me.

Sounds like you want the performance, in which case if you do go for the 460 can I buy it off you cheap in a couple of weeks when the gutless pile of junk drives you up the wall?

Heck a gtx295 are going for £200+ (not inc p&p) on fleabay so if you dno't like it you could still sell it and pick up a gtx460 and maybe turn a profit

One thing the gtx295 does have going for it is because it's the top end 200 series card and a dual gpu one then it will hold it's value better than a mid range 400 series.
