    replacement for 8800GT?

Alright well my mates 8800GT has started to fail i believe, he keeps getting BSOD when ever he launches a game with a problem regarding nv drivers however he reformatted and still is getting it and so i cant see it being a driver problem (hes tried old and new ones). I aint had a good look at it yet but i suspect the card is broke

He needs the card for Tuesday since i believe he has a CSS Match (plays in a league, top 17 in the world iirc). So must decide soon what to get, my initial suggestion was a gtx 460 as they are like £115 he was going to get it but said hes happy with the 8800GT performance so wants something a bit cheaper. Now i cant remember whats on par with a 8800GT? I know the 5770 is quite a bit better but im not sure if a 5670 is worse?.

    Any suggestions are appreciated!.

Second hand 260GTX? I have seen few going lately for around £80ish.

5670 will be roughly the same if that, probably worse. Go for a 5750 maybe? or a GTS 450? Or an extra tenner for a GTX460?

    Re: replacement for 8800GT?

So my old 8800 GT has bit the dust then

I take it you've had the cooler off and replaced the thermal paste etc ?

A 4850 1 GB if you can find one without the reference cooler would fit the bill.

    Re: replacement for 8800GT?

yeah ive had another look at benchmarks and the 5670 seems about 10-20% worse than the 8800GT so thats a no. 5750 seems a bit of a bump in performance and is available for £90 which should be great for him i believe.

He doesnt want a second hand card because well they dont tend to last as long (which is true but i tend to get second hand haha). Thanks for the help guys.

edit: Saw your post behemoth, thankfully not its another friend who has a dell . Chris (the one who bought your pc) has also had problems this week.... he getting screen curruption and a computer crashing, happens every so often this week apparently. Been so busy with university and these two mates still at sixth form so they have more time than me, meaning i cant go over and re do thermal paste and everything to make sure its ok!.

This 8800GT though, apparently his card (not chris) is running at 70C idle! So i told him to get rid of as much dust as possible if any cause thats way to high for this card .

You can get an HD4850 512MB for around £70 excluding delivery:

    http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Compo...roductId=40735

There is this GTS250 1GB for around £81:

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/168911

This 9800GT is around £61 excluding delivery:

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=GX-180-XF

This HD5750 512MB should around the same speed as an HD4850 512MB AFAIK and is around £82 excluding delivery:

    Re: replacement for 8800GT?

I'd say that the 5750 is more power efficient than the 4850, I know mine guzzles it like its going out of fashion.

    Re: replacement for 8800GT?

as usual CAT's spot on with those suggestions

They're all just a little faster than an 8800GT: the 9800GT is virtually the same card with just a minor clock speed bump, the other three are all just a little bit faster than that again and have about the same performance as each other, so it's virtually eeny-meeny between those: if you're looking for differentiators the 5750 supports DX11 and Eyefinity, and will be more power efficient than either of the 4850 or the GTS250. Obviously the GTS250 (being NVidia) supports PhysX and CUDA, if they matter to your mate...

I really wouldn't have thought Physx was in built to CS:S yet is it ?

    Re: replacement for 8800GT?

I just realised the GTS450 can be also had for around £93:

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/238440

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/1GB-P...I-I-D-Sub-HDMI

The problem is that the HD4850,HD5750,GTS250 and GTS450 all have comparable performance(scaryjim also pointed this out earlier).
