Gigabyte GeForce 470 GTX Super Overclocked Edition Issues

    Hello all,

MY first post, so please be gentle

I purchased the title card less than a week ago, and haven't been able to run any games using it. I installed a clean installation of Windows 7 and initially used the drivers provided on the disc with the card.

2D performance within Windows and older games (such as Gothic) - seem to work without any issues whatsoever - I have no crashes when doing anything in windows and experience no problems booting up.

However, if I try to run a game (Fallout New Vegas for example) - the loading screen appears, the title screen appears, and when I click load game and load my saved game it loads. When it has loaded I get a view of the landscape for a split second and then the screen goes black, then the game screen appears again, and then it goes black. Eventually I am returned to the desktop with a "nvidia display driver has stopped responding and has recovered".

This happens on all the latest games I try to run. So far I have ruled out driver issues, issues with my soundcard (creative), I have all my kit running at stock speeds (cpu and ram etc).

I have thought 2 possible issues - 1 is my PSU - which although is 850 Watts - has 4 12v rails rated at 20A each, and the card can draw from two of these. I'm wondering if a single 12v rail solution will b e better?

Finally - a possible issue with the card itself - although why would it work for normal 2D stuff but not on games?

Please can anyone offer some advice, and if anyone is running this card (or any 470) without issues can you let me know your PSU?
    Many thanks.

The PSU is massively overpowered, so I wouldn't worry about that.

I take it you don't have the opportunity to test the card in another system?

Re: Gigabyte GeForce 470 GTX Super Overclocked Edition Issues

    Hello,

Unfortunately I don't have access to another system. A friend is going to lend me an XFX 850W supply with a single 12v rail on for me to test - but like you, I'm not sure if it is the PSU.

    Anything else I can try?

I haven't had the Graphics card long and it is still within Distance Selling Regulations for the UK, so I can return it for a refund if need be.

Could the card itself be faulty, but still work in the windows environment and only cause issues when games are run?

Yeah, quite easily. Could be temperature issues, or fan issues, for one. Have you tried monitoring the temperatures and so on?

Re: Gigabyte GeForce 470 GTX Super Overclocked Edition Issues

I haven't done anything in depth, I did have GPU-Z running whilst I launched a game - temperatures appeared to go no higher than 60 degrees or so.
One odd thing however, I had manually set the fans to run at 100% on the graphics card - when I launched the game and it crashed the fans settings seemed to revert back to default or auto as they noticeably slowed down.
Don't know if that has anything to do with it.
