I'm not really a PC hardware guru at all, so I appriciate advice from friends and reviewers that are in the know.
I've be hearing and reading a bit about this PCI-X interface that will replace AGP.
Will this be a big step up ? when is it out ? What are peoples thoughts on it.
Is it worth waiting before buying my new motherboard/Card

PCI-X isnt't replaceing AGPHowever PCI-E is replacing both PCI and AGP.
Alot of sources make the mistake that PCI-X is PCI-E(Xpress) but they are both different.
PCI-E is going to be the expansion slot of choice for the next 10 years (so they say), so yeh its quite a big step up from expansion slots available at the moment. I personaly think its worth waiting for a system that supports and has PCI-E.
I think im right in saying that initialy PCI-E will have a buss speed of about 2.5Gig (where as older (PCI and PCI-X) had a max of 133mhz) and a totaly bandwidth of about 8GBps this is expeted to go up to about 32GBps
. I think this is double the bandwidth of the highest spec PCI-X slot. Also its hot pluggable i think.You can probably see that PCI-E is pretty nippy

ATi are flashing their latest PCI Express cards on their site, although no real world figures its a paper release but some good info is burried in those pages

PCI-Express has already been released to manufacture, it's just a matter of how long it takes to trickle out into retail channels over here. Basically any time

And PCI-X has been about for quite a while - though only seen in servers, and unlikely to make it's way into desktops - ever.
PCI-E - widespread support will come with Intels next chipset, and thats due to officially launch late this month IIRC.

ooooh so definatly worth waiting for then !!!!! if its going to be released this month although that puts my dream of a new case this month out of the window.
I might just dive in and build the system now as the new chips will cost the earth for a while

PCI-E is what you're looking for! PCI-X is what you wouldn't be that interested in.
