Apple, and the craziest display I have ever seen...

    http://www.apple.com/uk/displays/

"Feast your eyes on more than four million pixels in the first high-resolution 30-inch flat panel display designed for the personal computer. The Apple Cinema Display line features a gorgeous new anodised aluminium enclosure to complement the Power Mac G5 or PowerBook G4 and includes PC-compatible 20-inch and 23-inch models. "

    And you can buy now
I'm going to start saving for the 23 incher and a fx6800 ultra...
But as a poor uni student, I don't know if I'll EVER afford it.

edit: noticed a similar thread in the apple forum, but I have a PC, so thought this would be the best place

They don't mention it, but I believe the response times are 16ms for every panel. Which for the 30 inch is crazy.

Not a bad price either considering wost 21" flat panels are 800ish quid. 30" for 999 is a bargain if you've got the money.

bugger jus noticed that is for the 20" model!

    how much the biggies?

What mystifies me is why you need the newest top of the range gfx card to run it. Surely it would run just as well off a rad 9800 and the difference would be the same as any other monitor with these two graphics cards?

The 30" is about 2500 btw
I don't think its even a normal gfx card. Its a nvideo 6800 ultra with dual DVI connectors. Each DVI connector has more pins (correct me if I'm wrong) which carry alot more data than a standard DVI connection. Simply, DVI has a maximum res, and the 30 inch has a bigger native resolution than this. The enhanced DVI connector can carry this signal (have you seen how long the card is!!!!) and you can actually connect 2 30 inches together. For a total resolution of 5120 x 1600 :O (2x 2560x1600)
Aren't the NEC lcd monitors 1280 x 1024 on each?
The 30 inch monitor carries the highest resolution I have ever seen on a screen to my knowledge. I want it.

Maybe they mean gaming. Without say an x800pro or 6800ultra you cant really play farcry at 1600x1200 resoloutions native to the beastys

As mentioned, it requires two DVI connections to run it. I don't know of any Rad 9800 cards that have dual DVI (and AFAIK, it's just a regular DVI connection).

I'd prefer this one over the NEC one too. Apple displays always look nice and the resolution on the larger NEC monitors is surprisingly low.

Pfft- it's not even a contender:

I still badly want one though. LCD prices are set to tumble in the next couple of years, these things might actually cost a halfway sensible amount in a couple of years.

    Sounds good

I read in micromart that prices will drop next year and the year after due to a new type of lcd technology that has been harnessed. Apparently using this technology means that faster and cheaper monitors can be produced

Biaxial Nematic Liquid Crystal, has the potential to really up the ante on your refresh rate by up to ten times
if that doesnt deserve a w00t i dont know what does

Well my good old crt will be holding out until the technology improves then.

It doesn't need dual DVI connections at all. It needs a single DVI connector, which is why you can do dual 30inch LCD setups. What I'm trying to say is that the fx6800ultra that apple are selling is not the normal type.
It has 2 'dual link' DVI connectors. Each DVI connector carries double(not sure exactly) the signal of a standard DVI connector. Hence, bigger resolution. The only reason why you have 2 DVI connectors, is that at the moment, the fx6800ultra is the only card with dual link, and it originally comes with 2 DVI connectors.
The length of the card is HUGE

    My dream of having 4 30" 16ms LCDs running off 2 fx6800ultras....

Yup - Acliff is correct - they're Dual Link DVI Connectors - but theres other cards that support them.

Unfortunately they're pro cards like 3D Labs latest wildcat: http://www.3dlabs.com/products/product.asp?prod=293 so not much cop for games.

two 6800 Ultras with Nvidias new SLI tech sounds good though - Hopefully Nvidias next nForce board for Athlon 64 should have two PCI Express x16 slots... droooool...
