So close to treating myself to one of these because of a nice work bonus. Angling towards a Gigabyte Windforce 3x but the talk of the potential 4gb versions coming soon, and now the 670, means that I'm trying to do the right thing and wait it out.

Torn between the 7970 Windforce for the extra frame buffer (only have 1200p but gues that will help in the future with higher detail textures and more AA) and price and the 680 for pretty much everything else as it has the performance edge and maybe power too? Why can't things be easy

If you want Surround or to be really 4k ready do go for the 4GB IMHO, 2Gb is great for 1080p 3d but will have issues over time at res above that. 2GB 680 is brilliant for 2d-3d 100-400Hz 3d and will be great for years as 3d above 1080p has issues technically and with price (4k glasses free 3d screens being £7k in UK...!). And yes many games right now run in surround 1080px3 on even 2GB 680's but that will be a drifting target where 2GB could limit some options* by late 2012 and 2013 that 4GB won't even on a single card let alone Sli.

*As even VRAM could be the limiting factor even in Sli not Cores-shaders post 1080p.

My 2GB 680 is tied to my 1080p 3d screens and will remain so till they all stop working, but if I was doing surround at 1080px3 or better I would change to 4GB-6GB per GPU right now.

So, is my having only 2gb the reason why mass effect 3 has really detailed faces, and really low res body skins?

    I'm on 1280 res.

No, the mass effect series has been like that for the whole trilogy. Some outfits look great, then some are seriously ghastly. After reading around a number of reviews, I'm feeling a bit better about the 2GB VRAM and the lower memory bus. Its likely that I am only going to go 1920x1200, maybe 3d one day, but should be fine at that resolution, even with much AA and AF, well at least going by this, with 1920x1200 further down the page.

The premium for the 4GB versions is way too much for me, so looks to be a standard 2GB for me. May wait to see how the 670 reviews pan out, but more or less made my mind up now. Anyone here got a non stock/reference cooled one? Any thoughts, does it just keep things quieter, and does the cooling help/hinder any overclocking that you might have done?

Very nice indeed. I hope you have fun with it. What am I saying, I'm sure you'll have fun with it.

I just tried a GTX580 and can see performance difference between that and my 6990 is not that big, I'm thinking that maybe I should move to a GTX680 as soon as I can and get rid of those stuttering and noise issues that dual cards bring. Not that you'd have that with a 680 in SLI as it has variable V-Sync through the drivers now.

Re: Nvidia GTX 680 owners club

I have not used them yet as I was sent a new motherboard that had bent pins.
I have been in the RMA process for the last two months.
That will teach me not to go with SCAN

I have SLI GTX 680's, MSI reference (XSPC waterblocks are coming soon too) and they are powering my surround set up of 3 x (1920 x 1200) [three HP LP2475W]

Another after-market GTX 680 cooler. This is a 'Hybrid' so it's both air and water-cooling.

    I'm like, WTF?!

I'm surprised it has taken so long to get something like this to market.
