Win 8 will NOT support HD4xxx

    http://www.techspot.com/news/48321-a...and-older.html

Also with regards to Windows 8 support for the AMD Radeon™ HD 2000, 3000, 4000 Series of products; the In-the-box AMD Graphics driver that ships with Windows 8 will include support for the AMD Radeon HD 2000, 3000, and 4000 Series, and it will support the WDDM 1.1 driver level features. The AMD Catalyst driver for Windows 8 will only include support for WDDM 1.2 support products (AMD Radeon HD 5000 and later).

so you get vga supporting drivers - but dont expect to game.....

Re: Win 8 will NOT support HD4xxx

    You've misunderstood.

Out of the box, windows 8 will support HD4xxx and older, with all the performance enhancements etc. to date.

From that point onwards, only quarterly driver updates will be made, which will only contain bug fixes.

This is the same in Windows 7, XP etc for the HD4xxx and older. It's not specific to Windows 8.

Put another way: previously, manufacturers used to drop older cards from their driver releases full stop. AMD are making a change and are continuing to support older cards, but only for bug fixes. Performance optimisation will concentrate on newer cards (the older cards should be more or less optimised by now anyway).

Be intresting to see where Nvidia and Intel also draw the line (don't expect any favours from them either!)

Nvidia will continue to claim to support all cards, but only really put effort into the latest generation or two just as always.
Given the state of Intel drivers, would you notice if they dropped support?

Indeed while my 8800 GTX has little issues with games in win7 my 7800 GTX and below do and my Laptop using a SB Intel IGP is fab for video, for games insert laughter here.

Of course 3rd party support will continue for as long as technically possible but 'full' support from your manfacturer has a 2-3 year limit as always
