    9600

I am after one of the 9600 series but passively cooled. What is the best one to get?

This is a graphics card question, and as such should be in the graphics section...

AFAIK thats the only passivly cooled 9600, you could take a standard 9600 and stick a Zalman heatpipe on there, Im not aware of any other Passive cooling solutions for radeon cards.
Another cheaper option would be a Arctic cooling VGA Silencer, they are silent when used and also vent the hot air out the back of the case helping to keep the overall temps down as the hot air isnt rising from a passive heatsink directly to the CPU....

According to the Following Link, both Powercolour and MSI do passive versions?

The are either SE or non pro version which are a fair bit worse than the pro and XT version of the 9600. The only decent passive 9600 is the one Platinum mentioned but it far too expensive. The 9600 non pro and SE version are usuaully around the same performance level as the Geforce4 ti4200, but in some cases are a bit lower:

    http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/...-wxp-1024.html

In the above link notice how the 9600SE has the 5th worst score!

Your best bet would be going for a 9700pro from re-tek , as in the bargain forum:

    http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=24327

And getting the Artic cooler, or for absolute silence, get the Zalman heatpipe cooler (or powercolors heatpipe cooler - this is more rare and think komplett did it, but was a long time ago). If you dont like the idea of a refurbished 9700pro, then try to get ure hands on a 9800pro on the cheap (can get these sub £130 now), and if thats a bit too much get a 9600pro/XT or even a good old 9500pro/ti4200.

I used to have a 9700Pro, then I sold it. I wanted a silent solutuion that I did not have to mod. I have no aversion to modding, its just that the Zalman etc will not fit inside my Shuttle! I therefore needed one of the ones that are indeed naturally silent.

I dont really need that powerful a card. At the moment, my onboard gfx is a Geforce 4 MX, and the only game I play is SOF2 in a clan; for which it works fine. However, I do still own Vice City and Mafia which I play occasionaly - can the slower 9600's handle these, particularly Vie City?

I knew it, I was certain some other were, not least the Sapphire one. Cheers.

I think I might go for that one, unless someone here can raise any good reason why I shouldnt?
