    Unhappy X800Pro - Doom3 was dodgy....I hope HL2 will run smoother!

It took alot of tweaking and removing/installing of drivers to finally get Doom 3 to run smoothly and look good on my X800 Pro. I sure hope Half Life 2 doesn't cause similar problems.

The movies they have released of in-game footage look great. Lets hope it looks that good on the Radeon cards.

    Any views?

yeah....whats the rest of your system? Cos a Pro should do ok on Doom3 really.

You got lots of other stuff running too....?

It runs ok now. At first it wasn't great. The 4.7 & 4.8 Cat drivers are a bit behind the times when it comes to Opengl. The 4.9beta drivers fixed that somewhat.

    spec:
    Asus P4C800
    Pentium 4 3.2ghz
    1024mb Twinmos DDR 400 PC3200
    Antec TruePower 550 Watt
    Audigy 2
Altec Lansing 5.1 surround sound speakers
    Sapphire X800 Pro

The latest Nvidia cards run it far better apparently. But I think HL2 was designed with ATI in mind. Judging from all the promotions from a year back anyway.

I would be tempted to sell this X800Pro for a 6800U if it were to boost HL2 performance.

what was your fps? and res?

I run mine at 1600 by 1200 at high setings, I get 30 fps.... So it runs fine on my 9800 pro! Also HL2 will run much better! *Trust me! I know!!!

I run it at 1600 by1200 on high also. But on the 4.7 & 4.8 the textures looked all blurry. The whole thing just didn't feel right.

I am getting 60fps+ which sounds good but when the textures look all blurry and flat it makes it feel crappy.

The 4.9 beta drivers did improve this but I still think I should bet getting better out of X800 Pro.

I sure hope your right about HL2 running well on ATI cards. I am considering selling mine and going for a 6800U

Not to brag or anything, but a while back, someone asked for Doom III screenshots, so I turned up loads of AA and AF, put it on Ultra quality and 1600x1200. Took the screenshots, then forgot about it, and started playing the game normal on those settings.

It was a good three or four levels before I noticed a bit of slowdown when 3 Imps were fighting me at the same time, and I realised that I was still on those mad settings. My system was up to the task, mate.

Toned it down a bit though, just to keep things a tad smoother during big fights, halfed the AA and AF, kept the Ultra settings and res. Smooth as you like.

Really pleased with it to be honest, thought Doom III would be a match for any card, but its not that bad at all.

Roll on Half Life II, Rome: Total War, STALKER, Sims 2, etc, etc.

Pyramus not neccesarily, and we cant talk about that here anyway

CS:Source gives a great idea of how HL2 will run on your PC, since its the same engine. I run CS:Source at 1600x1200 on max settings and still get 70fps average I dont bother with AA/AF tho as they have a negligable effect at 1600x1200 anyway, so its just wasting GPU cycles

Thanks Spud, so you reckon it should run better than doom 3?
I might have to go back to the more stable 4.8cat for HL2.
The 4.9beta did have the Doom3 fix in it but that might not be necessary for HL2.

I have to say I've just switched from Nvidia to ATI and I've run into problems with their drivers already, so I will probably go back to Nvidia next time. I'm a little shocked at how sloppy a company as big as ATI are about something as important as their drivers.

That said, my 9800 pro can run Doom III at high quality 1280 x 1024, so I'm quite pleased. Although 90% of the screen is just black, so I dont imagine it requires much GPU power to render

And yeah, for 300 quid, I agree you should be getting better.
