Best nVidia card for new SimCity?

I sold my GTX 680 4GB DDR5 couple months ago (doh!).

    New SimCity game coming out...

    Should I get a GTX 480 or GTX 660 ?

The GTX 480 has better memory bandwidth and pixel rate; the GTX 660 has higher memory and texel rate (and is newer)!

Which one's the best choice for the new SimCity?

    Thanks.

Forgot to add, my mobo is an Asus Rampage IV Extreme, power supply is 1250W, and processor is 3960K. Beast machine, can handle anything really.

    I'd go for a 660 over a 480 any day.

Yeah +1 on the 660, go for the Ti if you can stretch it.

Out of curiosity, why does it have to be Nvidia? AMD have the better bang for buck cards at the moment.

Re: Best nVidia card for new SimCity?

Why are you guys recommending the 660?

Also, the game's website says it will "run well on a 275." I'm not looking to spend too much, as the price increase from 660 to 660ti doesn't justify performance. The leap from 550ti to 660 does, though. That's where I'm at. At least, I was until I started looking at memory bandwidth in the 480, looked pretty sexy...

    Any input is good input!

Re: Best nVidia card for new SimCity?

Get a GTX660 for,as long as you don't pay beyond the odds for one. Once you start hitting £175 you get the HD7870 LE and once you start hitting £200,you are in GTX660TI and HD7950 level territory. These are all faster cards than a GTX660. The AMD cards also come with some decent games,ie,Crysis3 and Bioshock Infinite or Tombraider.

Unless you are in a rush, there might be some reviews for GPU performance in the game.

I would look at this GTX660:

    You can get cashback too:

If you want to go cheaper, get an HD7850 2GB. I think these come with Crysis3 and Tombraider too.

In the nicest possible way, brand loyalty in the homebuild PC world is silly. Break your mould and go with an AMD card!

I still haven't gotten an answer to my original question, guys!

    Why would you take a 660 over a 480?

The GTX 480 has better memory bandwidth and pixel rate; the GTX 660 has higher memory and texel rate (and is newer)!

Look at benchmarks, 660 is faster all round, uses less power and produces less heat. Ignore the basic processing statistics they are meaningless in the greater scheme of things.

There's nothing wrong with brand loyalty, so long as it's not blind loyalty, I have always liked AMD CPUs but was not so enamored by them to think it a bad idea to try out an Intel in this current build, I have always liked nVidia but when I got my 6970 and consequent upgrade to my 6990 I didn't have a problem with that change either, I think it's good to have an open mind and occasionally look beyond what you usually go for.

Would anyone care to explain the memory bit bandwidth size and its importance versus the speed of the GPU in relation to the processing requirements of SimCity?

Neither are important compared to the underlying GPU architecture. You can't compare frequencies between different architectures as it's meaningless.

The 660 is using the newer kepler architecture. This is far more powerful for the power used than the old broken fermi architecture used in the 480. Even if you have a situation where the 480 might be a touch faster, it will consume so much power and put out so much heat that the 660, which will still give perfectly acceptable performance, would be a better choice IMHO.

See to me it just sounds like you're not loyal at all Surely loyalty is fairly blind by definition.

What does heat have to do with anything, I have water cooling and 6 fans X_x; if it's faster, it's faster... right? hmm...
