    I don't think you need to install any standard VGA drivers. What driver version are you using? Try the latest Catalysts from ATi.

    If the problems continue, try using something like Driver Cleaner beforehand.

    So:

    1. Uninstall any video driver you have
    2. Run Driver Cleaner
    3. Reboot
    4. Install Catalysts

    registry permissions error, seen this before.

    rather complex & nasty to fix.

    happens a lot with ati drivers.

    try running regedit, and going to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\PCI - in there, look for the keys whch equiate to your card (ATI's vendor id should be 1002, so it'll be something like VEN_1002&DEV_4151&SUBSYS_100010B7&REV_74)

    right click on the key, click permissions, make sure SYSTEM is shown as having Full Control. check the permissions further inside that registry key are also set to give System full control.

    Bear in mind as ATI cards appear in device manager twice, you need to check two separate vendor/product keys.

    if anything's not showing as system having full control, report back here

    report, diagnose, fix.

    we're still on the cycle of step 1 & 2, as you haven't said whether this is the problem. if it is, then i can take time to write the fix.

    I've had this problem before when switching from one ATi dual display to another dual display card so I'm interested in hearing the solution. I've not seen anything referencing permisions in regedit before?

    I know some of the keys are protected from editing once W2K is loaded. Could you elaborate further on the solution?

    2k? oh dear lord no. on 2k you're on your own. amongst its many charms, regedit has no permissions management - but another app, regedt32 (i think) does. that one has no search capability or anything like that though.

    bascially, if one of your keys seems to have lost its permissions, the solution is:

    * go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum
    * right click, permissions
    * set them how they should be (Read to everyone, Read & Full Control to SYSTEM)
    * click advanced, tick the second box down (replace permissions on child objects), then tick ok.

    this will re-apply the correct permissions to all your hardware, including giving windows back write access to the graphics card section.

    these instructions are for server 2003, and i think they're unchanged for xp. they are NOT this easy on 2000!
