Re: Looking to potentially upgrade to a 'nice' gpu

Bought the cpu and psu yesterday, arriving today Went for the Gold rated one, since it wasn't THAT much more.

I'm considering getting an air cooler for my cpu and using my AiO for my gpu which would mean I could buy a standard card, might be cheaper overall.

The Sapphire Radeon R9 280X Toxic OC 3072MB would suit your colour scheme but would be way above your price range unfortunately.

Re: Looking to upgrade my gpu, maybe use an AiO?

Hmm, well I'm going to build it this weekend, see how it looks etc, then I can make a more informed decision on what I'd like the card to be. I think I'm just going to use the AiO on my cpu, at least for the moment, if there aren't ANY cards I like/think fit the bill after a little while (I'm in no rush) then I may consider using an aftermarket cooler/AiO.

Also as time goes on with new releases prices will change, and my budget might as well depending how things go

You could always do 'the mod' and mount one of the refurb H80/h100s to your card You'd need decent case airflow also, but it should be doable.

I'd only considered it since I already have the AiOs, but since I'm not sure of the amount of space I'd have for an air cooler for my cpu, I'm going to just use the AiO on the cpu, and then see how much room there is etc. When I come to upgrade my gpu I'll have a chance to rebuild so I may change things around. But for the initial build certainly (this weekend) I'll just stick with my current gpu until I find something worth buying

Re: Looking to upgrade my gpu, maybe use an AiO?

I'd be *very* wary of using a CPU cooler on a GPU. GPUs - at the higher end at least - have much higher TDPs than CPUs, and modern GPU coolers tend to contact other hot-running parts of the card like VRMs (and something memory). Ripping off the old cooler and using a CPU-designed cooler instead cpould be a very quick way to fry the bits of your card that are no longer in contact with a cooler, and there's still the possibility that it won't cope with the additional heat output of the GPU anyway....

There's literally hundreds of people that have done this mod over on overclock.net and have been doing so since GTX 5* at least. Most leave either a case fan or some thing aimed at the GPU afterward, but since it can be big and only has to cool the VRMs/ram doesn't need to be loud. Something like a h100 should be more than capable of coping with the output of a GPU.

If I were to do it (which I won't be yet regardless) I'll be aiming to leave the fan shroud on so the VRMs still have they're heatsinks and the normal gpu fan will still be there to keep an eye on them

Due to the size of the case I think I'd still rather just find a good gpu with a decent custom cooler on it

Re: Looking to upgrade my gpu, maybe use an AiO?

So was starting my build only to find out my current gpu doesn't fit (by less than a cm!)
So it looks like I'll be buying a new GPU today

Ideally looking to buy from Amazon/Scan since I can get it Tuesday without paying through the nose for next day delivery.

Re: Need to buy a new gpu this weekend, has to be shorter than 260mm as well...

I reckon you'll benefit from the extra memory at that resolution plus what I have heard about the forthcoming releases. For that reason I'm not going to be relying on my GTX570's in SLI for long as their combined memory is only 1280MB (SLI doesn't double GPU memory).
I'm recently purchased both the GTX670 and GTX680 4GB versions from Gigabyte however they are beyond your size limit so I feel you will need to be extremely careful with card length in high memory versions.
