    Spec me a GPU upgrade!

    Hi guys.

I am currently in the process of transferring my build into a smaller form factor, with uni in mind, my current case (NZXT Phantom) is far too big! I have my eyes set on the Bitfenix Prodigy M, an M-ATX version of the original. I have a few questions!

    1. What motherboard would you guys recommend? I have an i5-2500k and am thinking of buying an ASRock Z77 Pro4-M, not too up to date with motherboards atm...

    2. Will my XFX 850W core edition fit inside of the Prodigy? Can measure it if needed.

    3. New GPU, 670 doesn't seem to be cutting it at 1440p and I'll need an upgrade. Seen a few good deals on the 7990 atm, but I'm a bit concerned about a few issues regarding AMD's frame pacing. Not too keen on having two cards in such a small case, so can't really see any other option atm.

    Cheers!

7990 is probably overkill, the £500 card space is hard to judge at the moment. My strong suspicion is that you'll end up with a toss up between 780ti & 290X, but, you need to wait a few weeks/month to let the market settle.

if this is genuinely with uni in mind, you presumably have the best part of a year to finalise your decisions. Given that AMD have just released the 290X, and we know for a fact that they're also releasing a 290 (non-X) and nvidia are releasing the 780 Ti, right now this minute is a bad time to be planning any purchase. There will be all kinds of pricing movements while the new GPU performance positions settle down, and then there'll be the partner designed, overclocked verisons of all the cards released to fill out the market. Give it three months, let the market settle, *then* make the purchases. Be cheeky and ask people for money for Christmas to help towards the cost. Save as much as you can. You'll get more for your money, and probably more money to spend, by waiting

Grab a GTX 780, the prices are really coming down on these.

Re: Spec me a GPU upgrade!

Some 780s can be had for 350 pounds which is really good value. That's what I'd go for. Until the 7990 has decent drivers, the 780 is what I'd get. HOWEVER - there are also some really good deals on the 7990.

Re: Spec me a GPU upgrade!

Bought a 7990, and it was faaaar too loud and way too hot.

RMA'd and will wait for a big jump on a card that doesn't run like a burning house

Indeed, however I'd rather wait till 800 releases and get a ti for the same price

Re: Spec me a GPU upgrade!

I have a 2500K with a P8Z68-V and I recently replaced my GTX 560 Ti and I have a desire for a smaller form factor too.

Initially I purchased a ScanFX GTX 760 (which is actually an MSI N760-2GD5) @ £167.99 via the today only offer.

I then fiddled around with MSI afterburner a bit before deciding to use Kepler BIOS tuner and nvflash to run the card @ GTX 770 frequencies, albeit with 2 SMX still disabled.

I then impulse purchased another this week and did the same again and then SLI'd them. I'm sure most half decent mATX notherboards and cases will allow you the space and potential to SLI too.

Normally I buy partner over clocked cards with a fancy power phase delivery system and custom cooler but I have to say I am really impressed with what the reference cards have to offer, especially after you tamper with them. If anything, the reference coolers are actually better for SLI as the closed air design sucks in cold air from the case and blows the hot air out of the back whilst with the partner cards using custom coolers you often find one blows hot air onto the other which is not good at all.

The best part is they spank a Titan / 780 Ti and cost 335.98 for the pair - less than a GTX 780 Food for thought anyway!
