    Is this worth it?

I've been looking for a replacement graphics card for my ageing 5850 for a while now, & today I found this offer on EBuyer:

    http://www.ebuyer.com/489317-xfx-hd-...i-fx-787a-cdfc

It's quite a bit cheaper than any other 7870 2Gb card I've seen, BUT...it's XFX. Is it worth taking the chance? I would normally go for Asus, Gigabyte or MSI due to their better warranties, but I'd be looking at 40-50 quid more. Oh, & it comes with a choice of two games, one of which is Thief (when it comes out), which I'd probably buy anyway...

I'm just curious what other people think?

    Hiya,

I've owned a few XFX cards, and not had a problem with them. I guess it depends on what type of user you are. If you tend to keep a card a year or two, then upgrade, all should be fine. If it doesn't work out the box, they have to replace. If it's working out the box, chances are it'll keep going for at least a year. On the other hand, if you tend to keep hardware until the bitter end (like me!), a better warranty service maybe worth the extra outlay.

Me? I'd go for it, if I wasn't so tight and always spent less than £60 on a graphics card!

    Cheers.

£168 on today only. Comes with two games which if you can sell (Splinter Cell Blacklist & Assassins Creed Blackflag).

WHy not; the 7870 is a good card. Have you looked at second hand cards?

I'm like you - I tend to keep my cards for some time, hence the 5850 I'm replacing I don't suppose you know if XFX use solid caps like MSI etc?

£168 is a bit more than I'd like to spend...£120 like the XFX is about my limit at the moment

I have looked at Ebay & second hand prices, but they tend to be a bit unrealistically high. I also like the comfort of at least a 2 year warranty...

Check you haven't got ebuyer set to show ex vat prices - the 7870 is showing as £145 for me...

    EDIT: (recommendations!)

If you can strech to £128: http://www.ebuyer.com/584514-powerco...70-2gbd5-dh-oc
    £121 gets you a 2GB 7850 instead: http://www.ebuyer.com/390923-sapphir...d-11200-07-20g
    Or you can save ~ £8 on a 1GB: http://www.ebuyer.com/390924-sapphir...s-11200-06-20g

    I'd recommend an MSI 7850 for £90 instead http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=GX-221-MS

    Re: Is this worth it?

As mentioned in the offers MSI 2GB 7850.

Or if your adamant on the 7870 you could look at cheaper alternatives such as from dabs, XFX HERE or a cheaper VTX3D (if you don't mind noise) HERE.

Or, a Tahiti from VTX3D HERE, albeit louder, hotter and likes power. No free games however.

    Just some options
"If at first you don't succeed; call it version 1.0" ||| "I'm not interrupting you, I'm putting our conversation in full-duplex mode" ||| "The problem with UDP joke: I don't get half of them"
"I’d tell you the one about the CIDR block, but you’re too classy" ||| "There’s no place like 127.0.0.1" ||| "I made an NTP joke once. The timing was perfect."
"In high society, TCP is more welcome than UDP. At least it knows a proper handshake."

    Re: Is this worth it?

I've only ever had one problem with an XFX card because it came with a weird non standard cooler in which the fan started to make a loud buzzing sound. I got a full refund and bought another XFX card that cost half the price, which is still running fine after 2 and a half years of constant use.
