I think one of the directors at overclockers mentioned last week there's a shortage of 280X parts right now hence no discounts on them.

for 250 I'd expect Sapphire Toxic (it was about this price 2 weeks ago, now it's about 300), I don't like to pay for someone's greed

Well you're not. It's a free market and prices are driven by good old supply and demand. When the card (when it was named the 7970) came out it was nearer £460, so getting the same for £250 could be seen as a bargain!

not going XFX route due to their rma hiccups, vtx3d doesn't ring a bell, I'd rather go with some more recognizable brand

To the OP,it is a bad time to buy the R9 280X cards. Litecoin mining is still profitable on AMD cards,and as a result there is shortage in Europe and the US due to the price hitting almost $43. The secondhand prices of the HD7950,HD7970 and R9 280X have skyrocketed.
