Nvidia equivalent of the 7970

Ok the R9 based cards are starting to come out but the price on the older siblings are not coming down.

I currently have a 7870 but was hoping to pick up a decent 7970 but the 200+ price tag is putting me off so i was wondering what does Nvidia have, sugestions ?

Its only a temporary price splurge due to Litecoins and anyway the GTX770 is £200+ which is the Nvidia equivalent. Even then the cheapest R9 280X cards were around £210 IIRC. I would still get the HD7970/R9 280X(both the same GPU) over the GTX770.

Thing is the price that i thought would come down hasn't; not for the 7970's i was looking at (Gigabyte) - everything else seems out of stock now and i have a feeling that i won't be able to pick anything decent up.

This 7870 cost me the grand sum of £100 after i sold the 6850 before it, i don't reckon i will get decent money for this and so not really willing to part with more; it seems deals have dried up.

I told you it was down to Litecoins. The HD7970 has the same GPU as the R9 280X. The HD7950,HD7970,R9 280X and R9 290 cards are the best for Litecoin mining performance in terms of throughput,price and performance/watt. Hence miners worldwide have been buying them up and AMD cannot keep up with the demand, It also means many companies have now increased price due to shortage of stock.

I would just stick with your HD7870 TBH.

The Litecoin hype will die down eventually and the 7950/70 should return to normal price. Give it a few more weeks.

I'm in the same position as you. I wanted to buy a 7970 for gaming reasons but it was just unfortunate timing.

I'm also considering a 7970 or 280X myself (finally got a pay rise).

I keep hearing about these Bitcoins and Litecoins... Not found a decent Newbie's guide to it yet, but basically it's getting paid for crunching data while your PC is not in use, right?
Do people actually make any worthwhile profits from doing this (ie more than £40 a month) and is it translatable into real money, rather than some faux alternative currency that may or may not be of any use to an average consumer like me?
ie Can I shift the Bitcoin balance into my PayPal and go buy some new shoes with it?
Also, I keep hearing stories of mining costing more in electricity than it makes and people's balances being hacked/stolen?

Regardless, I'm mainly looking to game on a 7970 myself, so I'll be sat waiting to pounce when prices become more sensible too!!

The the GTX 680 and HD 7970 are pretty much neck and neck performance wise but i'm not sure what the prices are like currently.

Well usually it's nVidia who do the rebranding. AMD didn't do it very often before. There was the switch to PCI-E, and since then a couple of OEM low-end market stuff I think. Nothing along the lines of the G92 stuff from nVidia though!
