Even on newish AMD Cards, if you are not going for Ubuntu which has has tools to make the process simpler, getting the most recent AMD driver installed can be a seriously steep learning curve.
I think the AMD support on linux has improved but that only highlights how bad it was rather than say much about the current support.
The problem people are complaining about is the quality and frequency of the Linux driver releases from AMD. Stuff breaks, that's fine, but not if it takes 6 months to fix. The words I would emphasize from my post above are the impression I got that "no-one wants to deal with AMD". I hope that if I dug deeper that would turn out wrong, but impressions can be important and they still have that image after years of saying they are improving this stuff.
And yes I am abusing Windows hardware, but generally speaking in Linux I find that works very nicely and stuff just works. The open source driver should work fine for basic video use (let's face it I am not expecting performance with an old card) so I should get another 5 years out of it with that usage.
Thanks for the feedback link, will have a play with that this evening.
