    amd OR INTEL

I've been watching the graphics card market through Jan/feb and so far have only been considering a R9 280x gpu (gigabyte or MSI gamer edition) as they have been cheaper than Intel.

However I have noticed that the Prices of the 770's are starting to drop to a similer price...

Which card would GPU chipset would you recommend r9 280x or a GTX 770?

I assume you mean AMD or nVidia, not Intel? Your choice depends on what you're planning to do with it, as both have their advantages & disadvantages. For gaming, performance is very similar, with each card winning or losing depending on the game being played:

If you want a card for compute purposes, go AMD as they are much better in this respect.

If you're running Linux, then I believe nVidia driver support is slightly better, but I don't use Linux myself so others my be able to advise you there.

Otherwise it will come down to factory overclocks, noise, games bundle, and of course, price.

If you have something different that needs consideration that's not covered in the other threads on this same topic then please tell us so that we can help. But a generic 280x or 770 with no further information has already been covered recently! See the above for examples of information that will help

I thought nVidia until recently was quite un-supportive toward open-source so I would've guessed that AMD will be ahead. Anybody can confirm?

The AMD open source driver is better than the Nvidia open source driver, however when using their proprietary binary drivers the Nvidia one is better than AMD's offering.
If you're not an open source purist and are therefore happy to use binary drivers, Nvidia is by far your best choice.

    Re: amd OR INTEL

The Nvidia Linux driver is the same core as the Windows driver so you get the same performance. Any card from 8800GT onwards seems to be supported.

AMD driver has iffy performance on high end cards, so you might as well buy mid range as that is the performance you will get anyway. The open source AMD driver works OK for basic use, but for example there is no sign of OpenCL support happening any time soon and they generally have a long way to catch up.
