VGA monitor plug into gpu's dvi slot by a converter but no signal

Having a problem on signal of my computer, so here's my problem..
The vga port on my video card was broken, so i bought a converter for dvi-i to vga because my video card has a dvi port. but whenever I put connect it, the monitor show no signal. why is that happening? when I connect my monitor through my motherboard, my resolution is not that good compare to the one's in my video card. what can i do? here's my spec..

motherboard: MC6P6P M2+
video card: nvidia geforce 8800 gt

I've used This cable with a 550ti and 7950 with no problems, converting DVI to VGA, not sure what your problem is, perhaps a faulty connection?
