upgrade from HD6670 - look at crossfire or new card?

I'm looking at a cheapish upgrade to my 6670. Ideally in the £50-£100 range - lower is better.

Is it worth putting in a second card and linking them or should I go for a whole new card?

If I were toput in a second card how similar do they need to be ?

    Same GPU family? Same model?

Or am I not going to see any worthwhile improvement for such a small amount?

Re: upgrade from HD6670 - look at crossfire or new card?

I would recommend upgrading to a new card, a Radeon 7770 or 7750 would match your price point pretty well. Or maybe even a Radeon R7 260X or gtx 750 ti if you're willing to reach £110.
Crossfire performance of the 6670 would be around the performance of a single 7770 so if you're looking to future proof your build somewhat, the 7770 would be a better option for instance.
As far as actually using Crossfire, you can just get another 6670 card and it would work in Crossfire with the original as long as your motherboard supports it and also the wattage your psu can output enough to power both.
But to be honest, the performance gain probably wouldn't be worth it I don't think especially if you have the DDR3 model of the 6670 which doesn't scale that well apparently.

I would put the 6670 on eBay and promise dispatch within 5 days. That way once the money comes in you can add that to your budget and look for a card that's higher up the performance range.

You can then order a new card and dispatch the old card in the packaging the new 1 came in.

Buy second hand as 6950/6970 are going for under £80 on forums like this and oc and that would destroy the 6670 or even 2 of them. 7850/7870 are under £100 and have same/better performance than 6950 and have lesser power draw.

You would need a decent psu as these cards need at least 1*6 pin pci-e power cable and most need 2.

    6950 unlocked ebay £80

Firstly, I am an AMD guy so I would recommend staying with that. But are you sure you need an upgrade? I am using a HD5770 and it is still working fine, although not on maximum settings. I would recommend a nice card rather than using crossfire. I just don't really like the idea of having two cards in a machine pumping out extra heat and using more electricity. http://www.scan.co.uk/products/4gb-s...sub-dvi-d-hdmi

That is about £70 and might do better than the one you have currently. It certainly has more memory. You might want to look into that.

    I think I'm sorted.

    I picked up a 7970 for £60

It is rather noisy so I'll be looking into cooling options but performance sees a huge increase.

Great deal you got on a much faster card.

You will want something like this then

Alpenföhn Peter - Radeon 79XX Edition High-End VGA Cooler £55

Great price I thought. Badly mis-described ebay listing

Just working my way through the cooling/silent PC forums. That Alpenfohn seems to be the business.

Re: upgrade from HD6670 - look at crossfire or new card?

just dont forget its 3 to 4 slots wide with fans as passive will just burn the card out.

Buy 3 or 4 of these fans (if you dont have any spare) and a fan controller or 2 (I use zalman fan mates and splitter cables) as they are loud at full tilt but push some serious air. I use 4 on my water cooling rad and they keep my 290x cool at min speed using the fanmates.
