Question [General Question] Underpowering the GPU

So a lot of you know that if a graphics card has a specific number of slots for power, you have to plug in the maximum number of PCIe-16 power connectors into the graphics card possible. However, I've heard that on some cards, if you don't plug them all in, there is a chance that your card may fry / go up in smoke... (assume the worst). But this doesn't seem right as you're not overloading the unit with so much power that it can't handle it - it doesn't seem logical. So is this just a myth or true?

Absolute myth. A crazy one at that. Can't say I've come across it before - it's just absurd.

You can even power a GPU up and get into Windows on just the PCI-e slot. The drivers will just give you a warning that they can't load any 3d content.

I thought so. Thanks a lot for replying because that bothered me a bit with a few saying that on random sites.
