    R9 270 power requirements

    I recently bought a NEW MSI R9 270 OC and also bought a NEW Seasonic Modular PSU [ M12 EVO 520W ]

After dismantling my PC and having only my ASUS P67, this PSU and the gfx card, the card's fans don't spin at first and then just spins on full speed but gives no display on the monitor.

Is the PSU inadequate to power this card or is it my Motherboard ?

I'm running a 270X OC on a 500W Corsair cheapy and it's fine. Sounds like a card/mobo issue, does it work in another system?

Don't have another system to try on , I am afraid. I do have my old PSU - OCZ ModXtreme 500W and that too fails to power the card.

virtuo, what are your +12V rails ?
The Seasonic's one is 20A on each +12V rail

Not entirely sure, it's this PSU (CX500M):

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-Buil.../dp/B00ALK1GFC

Newegg states 38A, but don't know if that's per rail, or total (or even accurate)

    Re: R9 270 power requirements

R9 270 (non X) here on a 450W XFX (Seasonic made), the whole rig isn't eating half of what's available, even when gaming.

Try a different slot, if you have one, fully remove/reseat the power connections a few times, call up a friend/colleague to ask if they can test the GPU for you.

It might be a duff PSU, it happens, more tricky to test though.

EDIT: check the modular PSU connections as well.

    Re: R9 270 power requirements

Bios update for mobo maybe? Best option to me after googling. Maybe run off igp if you have one and have a look in windows at the card.

There should be plenty of juice to power the thing!

    Re: R9 270 power requirements

Upon Googling around for a bit, it seems people who had similar issues with the card upgraded their motherboard's BIOS to fix the issue.
Now, looking at my ASUS P8P67, ASUS last released a BIOS update in 2012
3DMark seem to have done a test with the R9 270 on an Asrock P67 Extreme which also had it's last BIOS released in 2012.

Will go home and check if I have the 2012 BIOS , otherwise time for a new motherboard!

Might also want to try resetting the CMOS, that's worked a couple of times in the past for me with stubborn cards

    Re: R9 270 power requirements

Turned out that Asus had one more BIOS update in 2012 and my motherboard wasn't flashed with that. Put in my HD6850, flashed that BIOS and hey presto, the R9 now works!

    Re: R9 270 power requirements

Everyone has said it before and they are right. 500w is plenty. 430w is just about right. I use a 7870 which is basically the same thing and it had no problem with my ****ty 500w psu and of course there was even more wiggle room with my corsair 600w.

More than enough power unless you're running an FX9590 or something.
