Main display failing to come on out of power saving

    Hi,

I've had an occasional recurring problem with my PC for a while, certainly before I had my current monitors.

I've tried the main display using DisplayPort and DVI to no effect, always with the secondary monitor on DVI.

What happens is when the monitor wakes from sleep...so the PC is always on, it's just sent the monitor into power-saving...the main display fails to come on. There's no signal. On the second display there's a signal and the mouse will appear and I can move it but right-clicking doesn't bring up a menu.

I assume at this point it's crashed.

Any thoughts? Nothing ever shows in the Event Viewer. Windows has been reinstalled since and I still get the issue. I'm assuming it's hardware related in this case?

Card is a Radeon 7850 with latest drivers for Win 7 x64.

Should I buy a cheap dual-DVI card and see what happens with that?

    Cheers,
    Paul.

Re: Main display failing to come on out of power saving

I think it's an issue with the graphics card going into ULPS. I've had the same thing on a single monitor with a 7870. Some driver versions it seems to work fine, others it doesn't. I've disabled ULPS (using Sapphire Trixx) which helps a little, but I still have problems resuming from sleep occasionally. Likely to be software rather than hardware.

Thanks for the info. I thought about trying a cheap Nvidia card for a change but I can't find any sub-£50 that have either dual DVI or DVI + DP.

It's rather a pain when you left a drive encrypting in place and have no idea if it finished!

Re: Main display failing to come on out of power saving

    A slight update on this.

Switching to DVI has made it worse and it happens far more frequently.

Turned off power saving for the monitors and all is good at the moment.

I did discover that if the screen doesn't come back you can leave it until power saving kicks in again and try again, this has worked every time I've tried it.

Re: Main display failing to come on out of power saving

I had this with my 7750 when overclocked - apparently ULPS and overclocking don't get on at all. As kalniel suggests, installing Sapphire Trixx and using that to disable ULPS worked fine for me (then you can put all your other power saving options back to normal).

Re: Main display failing to come on out of power saving

    Hi probedb,

We're aware of this issue and it will be addressed in a future driver update. As suggested, in the meantime the temporary fix is to disable monitor sleep for now.

Glad to hear it. Hopefully it's fixed in a near release rather than a distant one
