GTX 980 or GTX 970 SLI with 4K monitor

Hi all, that old chestnut :S

I currently have a GTX 680 and I'm wanting to jump to a new card. The GTX 980 is the latest and greatest, but I've been reading a 970 SLI is out performing a single GTX 980 in the higher resolutions. I have a 4k monitor which I use as a main screen (and might upgrade to two i the near future) and two 1920x1200 panels either side, I used Nvidia Surround when I had 3 1920x1200 but not anymore.

The price for both are pretty much the same, I am guessing a 980 SLI is also amazing, but not at ~£900

So whats the best move?

I think right now a pair of R9 290's or R9 290X's for £400-£500 is probably the best way to go.

I'd personally advise the SLI 970. Not all cards offer that much price to performance in SLI but the 970 really does. For the cost (only a little more then a 980) you get significantly greater performance. 980 SLI would be nice, but as you say its expensive, and for most the sweet-spot is the 970, a good after-market one such as the Gigabyte G1 Gaming or Asus Strix would be my recommendation

Thanks all, I've opted for the 'one' 980. I know its not the "best" I could have right now as the 970SLI would have been better, but in 6/12 months time I'll grab another and enjoy some mutliscreen 4k gaming then

ASUS have some nice 4K monitors out, such as the PB287Q - I would personally wait until Windows 10 is released, at the moment text scaling is horrible in lots of applications.
