If they do have first silicon, then that is still months away from final silicon which is then months away from final product. That takes us to Christmas, and no-one releases new product just before Christmas as it drives the OEMs nuts as they plan major selling seasons well in advance, so that takes us to end of January at the very earliest. If this really is tape out and they don't have first silicon yet, then you can add a couple of months.

At least. Could be this time next year even. So as with all tech - you can always wait for something better around the corner!

    Re: Gtx980ti Review Thread

NVidia certainly wants to release *something* this time next year, it's part of their business model. But will we see the doubling of compute performance between GPU generations we took for granted in the past?

They couldn't get 20nm to market because of poor fabrication reliability. Even Samsung couldn't achieve the yields they wanted on their 20nm GDDR5 modules which is (allegedly) why we never saw those 8gb 980/970s we were promised last year.

Now they're going even smaller. It's all just vaporware and investor baiting, until high volume yields are actually shown. Even Intel can't get decent 14nm yields after 2 years of trying. As a general industry trend fabrication timetables have slipped, becoming more uncertain and speculative the smaller the process, as we approach fundamental limits of what the laws of physics and economy will allow. And then there's earthquakes...

I think the 980TI will be good for a couple of years yet. IMO any actual products we see shipping are going to be evolutionary not revolutionary in performance terms, unfortunately!

We'll see. Last years high end product is now so relatively slow that it's not included in the benchmarks, even without a process change. I've got a feeling the process change will have come through this time next year.

    Re: Gtx980ti Review Thread

Two years is my outlook too. I'm on 1440p at the moment and won't be moving up until there's a card out which will perform as well in UHD as the 980 Ti does with QHD. It could conceivably happen with the next generation, but I'm guessing on the one after that.

    Re: Gtx980ti Review Thread

I'd like to buy one in the near future but can't make my mind up which. Not much of a fan of overclocking but I'm not really impressed by the stock cooler temps.
    Any recommendations?

    Re: Gtx980ti Review Thread

From the reviews I've seen, temps are nothing to worry about at stock clocks. Plus the stock coolers exhaust out of the case rather than dumping a few hundred watts of heat inside your case, which a lot of open-air test bench reviews don't take into account.

I guess most of the non-reference cards (or at least ones with non reference cooling) should be better. If its pure cooling then there is a AIO watercooled 980ti from EVGA which appears to keep things nice and cool. Have a look on the web and youtube for some reviews.

I'm also thinking of getting a 980 ti now after not being too blown away by the fury, so after an initial google, the Gigabyte G1 and EVGA SC seem to be well regarded, although that might be more to do with the OC they have. Check for individual card reviews as there are usually some temps/deltas and comparisons to the reference card.

The watercooled EVGA looks nice although it's a full £140 more expensive than the reference which seems quite steep.

Like you I was hoping for more from the Fury, but alas it was not to be.

Fury appears a misnomer. Meh-ey would be a better name.

When you look at the way the Fury GPU is designed you would think it could have achieved more. Unless AMD have screwed up some where.

I'm debating at the moment to get the MSI GTX 980 Ti Twin Frozr GAMING Graphics Card 6GB which is out next week, or see what happenes with AMD's latest Fury x card. Bit disappointing that AMD's new card comes off second best, and I'm not sure if waiting will make it any better. Not sure what to do at the moment as I'm close to getting the 980Ti card next week, and so far AMD have said nothing as to why their card preformed as it did.

That MSI card is already out, no? Assuming you mean the 6G version. That's the card I've been looking at. I'm a little disappointed with the Fury honestly, I love the look of the card but since I don't plan to be on 4k anytime soon I just can't justify it.

You can get the complete EVGA cooling kit for £90, and I'd happily trade an hour or two twiddling screws for a £50 saving. Corsair should be releasing a bracket to mount their AIO's onto a 980ti soon as well, which will probably also cost £90 in total (but you get the option of upscaling to a bigger radiator, if you want to pay more for it)
