    tft definition

"Short for thin film transistor, a type of LCD flat-panel display screen, in which each pixel is controlled by from one to four transistors. The TFT technology provides the best resolution of all the flat-panel techniques, but it is also the most expensive. TFT screens are sometimes called active-matrix LCDs".

TFT is one of the major types of LCD technology. As Steve's quote says, it's the active-matrix variety, while you also used to get passive-matrix LCD screens (Not sure if they're around anymore - they're inferior to active-matrix screens). CRT screens, on the other hand, are those large heavy screens, similar to your typical TV (Though you're getting more and more LCD TVs these days. ). CRTs, in my opinion, tend to be better than LCDs in terms of response time, resolution, and overall colour vibrance. That, combined with their comparatively low price means that they're still quite desirable to some people (Like me. ).
