Worth waiting for 2020 Graphics Cards?

As I am building a new PC to replace one that is 10 years old I want to do things once and GPU is the last component to spec.

I was thinking 5700XT from AMD but no Ray Tracing means it will be outdated more than a 2070 S but then it is also a cheaper buy.

I guess the rumoured higher end AMD card will have RT but then will probably be 2070 S money, consume more power and rival 2080 S if it is similar to the 5700XT.

Anyone know of any cards forthcoming in this area of GPU price/performance?

Re: Worth waiting for 2020 Graphics Cards?

There's not really anything coming. However a 2070S having ray tracing doesn't make the Navi Line outdated, Ray tracing is value added (Its not really a feature that benefits the user besides being a bit quirky thanks to the minimal game implementation).
I've seen a few posts of something along the lines of a 2080s coming from AMD but I guess we'll have to wait till the 6th to see if we're actually going to get something.

A 2070 S will be outdated just as much if ray tracing becomes a must-have feature because it's so slow at it. So you've got a choice: decide that ray tracing will be a must-have feature in the near future and so wait until any good ray tracing cards come out, or decide that ray-tracing isn't must-have and buy the best card you can for your budget now.

Or compromise and buy a second hand card now and put the budget saving into an early GPU upgrade.

Re: Worth waiting for 2020 Graphics Cards?

The only new card I would consider right now is the RX 5700 XT, and only if it's a non-reference card with twin fan and below £350. The cheapest Powercolor option with twin fan on Scan fits this requirement, at £339:

    https://www.scan.co.uk/products/powe...-graphics-card

However you might be better buying an RX 580 4Gb for around the £100 mark on Ebay and waiting for the Nvidia's Ampere GPUs which I am expecting sometime in April / May I reckon, with mid-range options in June / July.

AMD should also have some nice Navi products out within the next few months too, a high end and lower-mid offering to fill the current gaps in their lineup.

AMD will be live streaming their Zen 3 line-up and no doubt teasing the new GPU's performance on the 6th January.

Re: Worth waiting for 2020 Graphics Cards?

Wasn’t sure if AMD GPU were shown at a later event than CES. Guess not long to wait and there is always 5700XT bios on a 5700 as an option, providing cooler is decent.

some excellent advice in here - I too would not worry about the card "ageing" as everything does

I also think an RX 580 might be a good stop gap and one that, in reality, might last you a surprisingly long time!

Next Gen Nvidia sounds promising so hope AMD are also looking at similar strides to aid competition and pricing.

Re: Worth waiting for 2020 Graphics Cards?

I'm not expecting AMD's new cards to rival Nvidia in pure performance terms, at least at the top end. What I'm hopeful for is that they'll be good enough to force Nvidia into more competitive price/performance at launch. Imagine if the 1650 and 1660 had been the 1650 Super and 1660 Super.

Speaking of which, I'd be much happier with a more sensible number of refreshes this year. 2019 really did become the year of "just wait and see" with Nvidia releasing a new card more than once per month on average.

Our guide will help you sort through the best video-card options for your desktop PC, what you need to know to upgrade a system, and how to evaluate whether a particular card is a good buy. We'll also touch on some upcoming trends—they could affect which card you choose. After all, consumer video cards range from under $50 to well over $1,000. It's easy to overpay or underbuy. Re: Worth waiting for 2020 Graphics Cards?

I still feel like the GPU prices seem so inflated at the minute. Mid-range cards should not cost £300+. I've recently settled for a RX 590, that I picked up from CCL for £140. Plenty of bargains for RX570/RX580 around, it's an old card but still solid at 1080p.

Re: Worth waiting for 2020 Graphics Cards?

You're going to find it hard to get anything with decent price to performance ratio given the current sate of the markets...and I suspect that will remain the same for the next few months at least. I'd recommend waiting and getting yourself on PartAlert Discord and trying to nab something at MSRP - it can be done!
