Hi, I'm interested in learning more about GPU deshrouding and whether it's considered a good idea or not. Does anyone have any experience to share on the matter, and any advice or tips for someone considering it?
I'm currently building a Small Form Factor PC, a new system in a 7.2L Dancase A4. I've been really struggling to find a GPU that will work for it, both due to size constraints and trying to figure out what level of card to target. I'm looking at RTX 30 series and Radeon RX6800s, and this (see end of post) is the complete list of GPUs that will fit in my case (I'm limiting my search to 3 fan cards because I'm keen on a quiet system!).
I've been trying to get a 3070 Eagle or a 3070 Eagle OC for a while, as they seemed to be the best performance that would comfortably fit and also don't look really ugly (to my eyes). The EVGA cards are generally too thick (the thickness limit is up to 45mm), and I would not be happy with the side panel bulge that they would cause. I have, however, included the non-Black Gaming versions because of my investigation into deshrouding.
Looking at the cards end on in pictures, their fans and shrouds seem to protrude past the PCIe bracket, I believe hence their designation as 2.2 slot cards, and by trying to measure the picture against a known dimension (Display Port length and width), it seems the fans and shroud measure around 15/16mm. I've been wondering whether removing the shroud an and directly mounting two or three Noctua A9x14 fans to the card heatsink would save me enough space to fit these cards in, as that would let me run a 3080 instead of being capped at a 3070. It would certainly get rid of the ugly black wave case and embossed Es all over the fans, which I really dislike the look of.
Do any of you have experience deshrouding a graphics card and mounting aftermarker fans, especially EVGA cards? Do you think I'd manage to save any space or if its worth it? Would I need to design and print some kind of shroud myself, and any tips if so? I'd love to see or hear about any deshrouded builds you might have done.
