Overclockers seen what the scalpers were doing and went "hold my beer"

That is legit disgusting. Like of course the retailers were going to price gouge us too, because as much as they like to pretend "oh hey we're enthusiasts too we're in this together" no, absolutely not lol.

But this was surprising. Twice as much as retail is it ?

Scan are bundling theirs with CPUs and things to hide their gouging too. It's a shame because I was a bit of a fanboy when it came to Scan - I built my first PC from there, I'd drive the hour or so to it rather than get it delivered just so I could visit the store. But this whole thing..bah.

And ya I know, I'm naive etc, but it's not like I was expecting actual retail, but I thought..oh they'll scam us for 20, MAYBE 30%.

I guess this is another excuse to move to Amazon for PC parts (I know they're the worst for scalping and price inflation, but outside of this scenario, they're so far and ahead of retailers - "oh your motherboard is broke ? Send it back, we'll test it, get back to you in a while. Maybe" lol. Amazon you just return it and get a replacement the same day near enough)

Is it Overclockers gouging, or is it the middleman suppliers? Or is it both? I suspect it's more the middleman.

Re: Overclockers seen what the scalpers were doing and went "hold my beer"

The pricing is way out of whack, but surely the distributors/suppliers are driving their prices up too?
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

I'm thinking myabe nvidia are heavily involved here. They never wanted the 3080 at 700, they wanted it to be a 1000+ card, but AMD forced them into this price point. This scarcity though has given so much reasoning to inflate prices, and I reckon it'll just stay like this.

Currently looking at 3070s for sale at Overclockers and they're a THOUSAND FLIPPIN QUID. FOR A 3070! Nvidia have been trying to raise prices for ages (2080Ti was 70% increase in price for 40% performance wasn't it ? Something daft like that) and I really can't see the 650/700 quid RRP coming back.

God I hope FSR is good, I'll jump ship to AMD in a heartbeat. I will admit I'm a bit gutted as I've always had nvidia, and yeah I know, brand loyalty is silly etc. but damn, it can't be helped when you use the same thing for 20 odd years!

Amazon can afford to do that only because they've already made well over what it costs them to do this through the aforementioned scalping on the millions of other products they've already overpriced.
That's not good customer service, that's just ripping off Peter for £50 to pay Paul's £2.20 return postage costs.

If that was the case, Nvidia would charge similarly for FE cards.

So no, I think it's the AIB partners that are doing this mostly - and that's partly because they've got a bit less stock than normal so they need to up margins to maintain turnover (or they've have to lay off tons of people) - and partly retailer for much the same reasons.

Re: Overclockers seen what the scalpers were doing and went "hold my beer"

The OCUK staff have stated clearly on their forums that the AIBs are charging more to the distributors and that the distributors are then charging more to them.

Obviously you can decide whether or not to believe them, but it makes total sense to me.

They were selling RTX 3070 cards for £600 a few days ago - if they really wanted to scalp there was no need for them to do that.

Unfortunately the whole situation has got a bit crazy, and everybody looks bad. But at the same time, the problem is consumers (whether mining or not) are happy to keep buying cards at inflated prices.

In some ways we are lucky that the manufacturers and shops haven't pushed the prices up to the absolute limit that the market would bear.

Yeah the reasoning may be bad overall, but it's still a no brainer when it comes to the choice of replacing a motherboard right away or waiting weeks for it. Amazon are the devil, but they've built themselves to be so convenient in a lot of important areas and it means my moral outrage takes a back seat to me not being without my PC. And same for a lot of people, especially work at home folks - being without a PC for even a few days can be really bad.

Aye could be. I'm just kinda lashing out atm, scalpers is one thing, yeah they're annoying but they're a known annoyance. When you see retailers showing prices that are tons higher, it feels way more...aggreving I guess. Although there is an upside to seeing 3070s at a grand too - seeing 3070s for sale, and lots of em. It might mean stocks are coming back in, scalpers are backing off because they can't scalp an already high price, and people who won't buy off scalpers for a bunch of reasons but will pay higher prices from shops could all mean scalping dying down and maybe prices reducing a wee bit.

I'll be honest, I'd pay over the odds for a 3080. I'd deffo pay a ton over, maaaaybe 850 total, because it is a massive upgrade over a 1080Ti and I can get a few hundred quid back for it too. But I'm quite happy to wait a bit longer. I feel like it'll work out the same - I pay a lot for a 3080, but get a good price for my 1080Ti, or I get a better priced 3080 and my 1080Ti resale value goes down too, so it all shakes out equal kinda thing.

Re: Overclockers seen what the scalpers were doing and went "hold my beer"

The issue is the distributors are doing it AFAIK,and the AIB partners are selling more of the expensive models. It's quite clear Nvidia, and maybe AMD RRPs are being set for marketing purposes,ie,they are probably asking too much for the components they supply and can blame partners, retailers, etc for the problems. Nvidia did this for Fermi, and AMD did it for Vega.Nvidia apparently sold GPUs direct to miners too. You can see this by Nvidia doing very well WRT to financials recently.

On top of this scalpers and miners are using bots to buy GPUs such as the RTX3060,RTX3060TI,RTX3070 and RTX3080 as they are have good cryptomining hashrates for the power consumed. OcUK had quite a few RTX3060 GPUs under £600,but bots had bought a lot of the cheaper models(they were cheaper than most of the DIY parts retailers). One was £550 and it sold out in under 5 miniutes. That was the cheapest RTX3060 from a UK specialist DIY parts retailer. I can think of only Amazon or Currys perhaps doing it cheaper but you find hardly any stock at them for those parts now.

OcUK also a week ago did a special forum deal for members, where they discounted 200 RTX3060 and RTX3070 GPUs too. They did it 2 or 3 times before IIRC.The cheapest for a RTX3060 was around £450.

The thing to remember with a policy like Amazon's is that your convenience comes at someone else's expense, and that mine comes at yours. So if you're happy paying for me to abuse my stuff and then get a completely free replacement, go right ahead....
I also note that while Amazon 'sell' some things, they're actually just fulfilled by them (for a price) and you're still at the mercy of however that marketplace shop chooses to run things. It's a convenient way for Amazon to fob your problems off elsewhere, if they feel like it.

I think OCUK get a lot of bad reviews from the same sort that give Amazon items bad reviews because the postman messes up or when they can't figure something out despite not reading the included instructions. Certainly I've never had a problem with them and neither has anyone else I know in the real world.

Re: Overclockers seen what the scalpers were doing and went "hold my beer"

I suspect there is a bit of extra headroom added by everyone due to how things are on the supply/demand side at the minute, and as long as XYZ e-tailer says hey we're trying to help and sells cards a few quid lower than the next guy, they look like the good guys, tbh, people are blaming miners, suppliers, disty, e-tailers, yet all of these companies are in it to make money, and with as many of them as there are, margins are usually tight, people don't care about support, they care about being able to get stuff cheap, so, tbh, after years of having a minimum margin can you really blame any of them for making a bit extra from time to time...

Best not to get your hopes up, but various sites are reporting things maybe easing a little in the next few months, or at least the last QTR of the year.

Re: Overclockers seen what the scalpers were doing and went "hold my beer"

Price drops could have feedback - if people see the prices are going down, they'll be more likely to put off purchases for a few months in the hopes of buying closer to MSRP. This could accelerate the collapse.

In a year or two once the miners get bored, I look forward to RTX cards flooding the second hand market like 480s did

In a year or two though there's likely to be another coin that responds well to mining..

I can see a lot of scalpers dropping prices quickly though as I imagine they don't want to be sat on cards they cant move on..
