    definalty get an ATI card.

the nvidia gf4 cards are atm the best for very low budget (£25 second hand upto £100 new for a very good one) but dont spend more than £100 on a gf4.

ALL of nvidia dx9 offerings (5200-5900u) are very very very rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishe at dx 9 stuff, this is why:
    http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/sho...hreadid=127882
the nvidia cards are acctually slightly faster at dx8 than the ati equivalent.. but that doesnt matter as theres no dx8 games good enuf to push these cards. a 9500nonpro (not softmodded) will beat a fx5900u that is overclocked in dx9 stuff.

there is a shop selling grandmars branded 9700np/pro (hong kong manufacturer, good quality) in the UK/HK for about £150 so u may want to look at one of those, but if not a 9600pro would be best and about £25 cheaper but a bit slower (it will overclock well though)

or you can look for a second hand card which could be a bit cheaper aswell.

9800np (about the same perf as 9700np/p) is about £200 if u can afford that. the 9800pro should be about £270.

soon ati are releasing the 9800 XT version, which is just a 9800pro but with faster core and ram, not sure on the speeds but i think itll be around 450/450. this will make the price on other cards drop slightly...

    as |SilentDeath| has stated
you can get a rad 9700 non pro for that sort of money m8
its a granmars brand but ive got one and its a damn fine card
ive posted about it so many times now on these boards people will be sick of me going on about it lol
or a gf4 ti 4200 for half the price is a worthy card as well cos you can clock them to nearly ti 4600 speeds
but id recomend the grandmars 9700

    Here's the link ... http://www.kl1128.fsnet.co.uk/vga.htm

A few people have bought from him very happily either from the site or from his Ebay 'store' ... he has a VERY high rating.

As already said. If you want something new the only two logical options are:

    * GF4TI4200 for sheer speed, stuck with DX8 (not limiting at the mo) and only decent at AA+AF but it's cheap and would enable you to wait happily for the real high perf (and new mid-range) DX9 cards due in a few months.

    * Rad9600PRO if you want DX9 now, plus you get great AA+AF to really make games look great (esp older ones). It does o/c very well (as does 4200) but is still a little way behind a Rad9700 (nonPRO). Undoubtedly the best DX9 card you can buy (cheaper are slow and faster are a LOT more expensive).

Second hand there's the 9500PRO which is a shade better than the 9600PRO esp when o/c'ed. Next there's the 9700nonPRO which often o/c's to surpass the 9700PRO AND 9800nonPRO. Other than that it would be looking for a sweet 2nd hand deal on a GF4TI.

Avoid 9800SE, there is a tiny possibility of modding them to a 9800 but basically the 9600PRO makes MUCH more sense as the 0.13mu it uses allows for very high clock speeds. 9800SE is little more than a 9600PRO with slower clocks built on the hotter 0.15mu process. As already mentioned nVidia have slipped up in MANY ways (certainly from what we can see to date) and really should dump the FX series and redesign from the bottom up, only the FX5200 is worth it as it beats the GF4MX and Rad9000-9200 it competes with ... but then the GF4TI4200 is only £25 more and WAY WAY better in every dept.
