    1600?

    Hey there.

I know this question may seem a bit trivial to some of you but where as I am a heavy gamer I dont know much about what goes on inside the machine

Anyway, I just bought a new PC with a Asus 6800GT Ultra and when looking at different benchmarks I see ppl playing Half-Life2 at 1600 res where as it doesnt not give me the option to even run it at that res.
Could it be my screen that is preventing it?, if not any idea's on why that could be happening.
Thanks in advance for any help.

    GG

P.S. Dont go to rough on me

If you are runnin TFT you 90% of the time will not be able to view 1600x1200 unless you have a majorly expensive screen.

    Say >21"

As Dougal says it will only show you the resolutions that your monitor is capable of. TFT wise the Dell FP2001 will do the job but not much else cheaper than that will do it.

Unrelated but perhaps important, don't use ASUS Smart Doctor!!! IF you have it installed either set the fan to 100% or just get rid of it, as it makes the fan run far too low (quiter perhaps) but it WILL overheat and can destroy your card.

Oh yeah, as mentioned, you need a bigger screen, if you've got a CRT (21")somewhere you'll see it can probably handle the higher res.

    Actually 20.1" TFT's do 1600x1200.

This is why CRT's are still king for gaming in my view.

Ive never quite understood why a 19" LCD can't do 1600x1200, when a smaller 19" CRT can.

lack of market demand. a 1600x1200 19" tft needs smaller (more expensive) pixels than a 20.1" - would you pay more for a smaller screen?

If it was better quality, yes.

Most 19" CRTs don't actually have enough phosphor dots to display 1600x1200 fully.

A 19" screen with a viewable area of 18" would need a dot pitch of <0.23mm to display 1600x1200 correctly. That's possible I suppose....

Pitch is 0.24. I cant see how it doesn't display it properly, it's awesome gaming at 1600x1200 85hz.

Well, a 1600x1200 image is about 1.92m individual pixels. If your dot pitch is .24 then you don't have 1.92m individual phosphor dots on the glass of your CRT, and so it can't possibly display them all properly. TBH it's probably close enough to make little or no difference- but if the game allows it you could try playing at 1440x1080 and see if you can turn up the quality (be it detail levels, AA, AF etc.) instead, it might look better overall. I'd have a go myself but I only have a 9700, so I'd get a slideshow at either resolution, I play at 1280x960 on my 20" viewable monitor.
