Warranty on a failed modded card ?

My X700 Pro died last week and I think that I won't get a replacement for it from the supplier so I've allready bought a new X800 GTO2 to replace it.

My dead card is a Sapphire X700 Pro bought on the 29th December 2004 so in theory still under warranty ?. The standard HSF drove me mad so I bought an Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer 1 for it, sanity restored I was happy I've never altered anything else on it e.g. overclocking.

I think though that the ATI Silencer failed, the card got too hot and a small surface mount resister (?) on it has blown, the resistor is cracked/black/surronded by chared PCB.

Now, as I replaced, and threw away (doh!) the OEM HSF I presume that I have modded the card and it's good bye warranty ?.

FYI the card was bought from eBuyer.

Opnions ?.

I knew the reality, just needed someone else to confirm it (off to cry in a dark room)

I've got an Arctic Cooling HSF on my 9600XT. Not let me down so far. In what way do you think the AC failed? Fan stopped working?

you might get something off arctic then - after all, its their fault you have a dead card.

There is no need to replace it.

IMO, it’s best to run the card at stock before doing anything to it. The benefits of this are twofold, you get to test for stability and you can test fan noise level at full speed (the fan can spin up and down depending on temp).

I cannot hear the GTO2 cooler over my case fans but the system is relatively quiet overall. System64-X2 has 7 80mm case fans (two front intake, two exhaust, two side and one blowhole at the top). The loudest fan in the system was the original chipset fan on the ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe but that fan went belly up some time ago.

System64-X2 is not as quiet as my HP m1070n MCE 2K5 PC but that’s because the HP only has a slow fan on the CPU HS and the PSU. The loudest thing on the HP is the HDD and 99.9% of the time I cannot hear it.
