Well, it's not conclusive but it may be. I got a VPU Recover kicking in once on a test machine at work.

On my machine I get a crash, on average, every 2-3 hours. Everything is running at stock. It definitely could be a knackered card but i've just had a go on FS2004 for 2 solid hours and not a single crash. Earlier I got a crash within a minute of booting from cold!

It's decision time tomorrow to decide if i'm going to be buying another card.

Have you tried the Omega Drivers instead of the ATI Cat's, worked for me on my 9600XT.

Okay, will try the Omega drivers as a last resort before ordering a new card. Thanks for the advice. The crashes are getting very annoying

Take the heatsink off and remount it. There's a good chance it wasn't on properly.

i had problems with my x800 but once i turned off the following options it was rock solid:

    In BIOS
    Sideband addressing - OFF
AGP Fast Writes - (not sure if there is a PCI-E equiv of this, if so OFF)

    In Control Panel
    VPU Recover - OFF

Probably wont sort a damn thing but its deffo worth a go.

I agree,X800XT's dont seem to like fast writes being enabled and I would also disable VPU recover.
On the options tab/page....disable all but the top one WMV acceleration.

I ordered one from ocUK last night. I think it cost a few quid more but they also had the SecureConnect SATA I needed for my Raptors. CityLink postage was £8.

yep that's exactly what i would do - good call. VPU recover causes problems. It's totally useless turn it off.

Also use drivercleaner3 to remove all gfx card drivers and their junk then reinstall. ati2dvag.dll is a software issue not hardware - it's a fairly common problem too.

I have tried a lot of things and i'm grateful for all those suggestions! Last night I took the card out and checked the h/s and fan. I then monitored the temps whilst running the benchmark program in the Omega drivers. The GPU temp got up to a max of 72C. So I guess that's an okay max temperature?

The fan speed was at 100% at that temp and I could defintely hear it. It cooled down very quickly after running the bench program and runs at GPU:32, ENV: 39 whilst just surfing and doing e-mails.

Yet, the PC also crashes at those temps so i'm not 100% sure it's a temp related problem. Anyway, i've bitten the proverbial bullet and have bought an nVidia as i've been having these random crashes pretty much from day one.

I've tried running DC Pro in safe mode, cleaning my Registry using Registry Mechanic, etc., all to no avail. I'm pretty sure it's just a duff card. I bought it as an OEM product and it arrived in just an anti-static bag that was actually open. I should have returned it there and then but was too anxious to build my rig! My fault completely.

72 C is WAY too hot for your card to be running at even under full load while benchmarking. You need to seriously rethink your case and/or GPU cooler before you fry your new Nvidia card IMO.
My X800XT PE never goes over 57C even under the heaviest gaming/benchmarking loads.

This is what I use on my card+ the optional cooling fan as shown below
