Unhappy Trying to buy a new LCD monitor

    Hello All,

I hope that you can help me out with a little problem that I have with choosing a new LCD. I recently had the chance to use a Sony Laptop which has one of the "new" x-black LCD screens and I am really impressed how clear everything is compared to my 19" Mitsubishi CRT which I use at home - I'd never really looked at LCDs in detail until now.

I have already done a little bit of looking around for a 19" or a 20" LCD (so many to choose from already!), but I would like to know what everybody thinks about the possible choices that I have from the list below. Price is not too much of an issue, but that's why I was sticking to max. 20" since I don't really want to pay >£500 for one.

For my usage, well I guess that mainly I will be on the desktop (ie. Word, Internet etc.), with maybe some Video/DVD usage although I do like to dabble in the odd FPS now and again (HL2/F.E.A.R/UT)), although maybe I should keep the 19" CRT as a second monitor and use it just for games

    Here's my shortlist:

    • Dell 2005FPW (25% off ATM) - is the backlight bleeding that bad?
    • Sony SDMS205FS (20")
    • Sony SDMHS95PRS (19")
    • or a Viewsonic Display (don't know which one would be best)

I apologise if I've missed out any obvious good displays (I'm new to this ) Does anyone have any thoughts on others I could consider?

Thanks for any opinions that you have,
    SQ

I'd go for the Dell 2005FPW. It's great for what you want. The Sony's are costly and use the same range of panels so you would be hard pressed to find the differences.

    Dell IMHO.

I have the 24" widescreen version, it's awesome. I haven't noticed any backlight bleeding, just a nice, even, clear, sharp, bright picture with no ghosting or any undesirable effects that I can see.

The X-Black screens (IIRC) are the ones that have a glass fronted screen as well so they're prone to glare or reflections that the soft screen ones like the Dell's don't have. I can't imagine why anyone would buy a screen that was that shiny over one that isn't to be honest.

I've heard conflicting stuff about the overdrive on the Samsung 930BF, apprently it can cuase some pretty nasty blurring when you moving contrasting colours about:

Hi I just got the Dell 2005 with 25% discount. I moved from a 19" CRT, and i can honstly say i can't see any mouse lag/backlight/ or dead pixles. Superb TFT, if you're worried about these issues you can get the 20" apple - a little more expensive but saying that i've never heard of anyone complaining about the apple.
