    Talk bout bad luck i bought one unbranded card from lowest tried the softmod and no luck artifacts all over the place on the windows desktop............then in the rage of the moment i went and ordered the Hercules card from Overclock.co.uk and guess what exact same problem!!!

    Unfortunately it takes luck more than anything else, you gambled (twice) and lost. Still stock perf is very good and you can sell them (Ebay?) for the price you paid (if not more). Then grab a 9600PRO/XT which always tend to o/c very well ... they'll never be a 9800PRO but still VERY fast cards when o/c'ed.

    i have ordered a herc AIW9800, am i right in saying that i can just download these drivers to try and softmod it?

    I don't think it matters, the 9800SE you want are the ones with 256bitDDR and 380/340 clocks, if the softmod works that means you're 100% equal to a 9800PRO and hence o/c'ing is to reach 9800XT speeds! RAM that works at 340mhz stock is already hugely fast ... I'd hope for more on the core myself.

    recieved my 9800se aiw today from overclockers and it modded no problem and all using the latest omega drivers

    Ok i've really hit a bit of bad form, managed to get my third card and yet once again.....no luck, weird bit is that a lot of my desktop icons have corruption and artifacts but if i drop the desktop down to 16bit they r gone?

    Maybe try downclocking the card ?
    It could be that by lowering to 16 you are reducing stress on the pipelines, as would downclocking the card ....
