I've seen a Radeon 9600xt (saphire i think) with 256mb, is that better than the 128mb version? read that the 256mb versions of FX5600's were slower than the 128mb's, wondering if this is the same, tia.

yea the 256 meg version uses slower ran so i makes the card slower
Not always slower, the top cards certainly use the full clocks (if not slightly higher). However 256MB is a total waste, by the time that much gfx RAM is truly useful even the 9800PRO may look very mid-range if not slower. If buying below the top of the range I'd seriously advise the 128MB versions.
agreed
256 is best used at mammoth resolutions WITH all the Full Screen anti-aliaising and Anisotropic filtering...and that Core aint powerfull enough to do all that at hooooj resolutions.
Besides.....as you point out, lots of vid card manufacturers only use cheap memory to be able to advertise the ram SIZE on the box to fool the unwary
It works too
