right well after a readup it appears that memory speeds are automagically drops from 400 to 333 when 4 sticks are used. so now that my memory is running below spec should i squeeze the timings a bit? cas2 perhaps? (this is the cas 2.5 stuff not the cas3) need to claw back a little of the lost performance.

wont clock up, no option for that. its done automatically by the BIOS on my POS mobo.

I take it your on 939 so no point in upgrading mobo... well you could sell it and buy 2x1gb... not sure what else you can do

It could be one problem stick.
try sticking in each stick by its self and checking what the BIOS thinks it is.
If one of them comes up as only 333mhz then RMA it (that could be the problem as autodetect will tend to set the speed to the lowest stick)
no its a known problem with nortbridges of a number of chipsets. i accept that i have to run at 333 and i am ok with it.

The AMD Chips have the memory controller on the CPU, rather than the northbridge.
It was a problem that was addressed after the Venice line of single core chips, or so I thought.
I assume the reason the speed is dropped to 333mhz rather than 400mhz is for stability/compatibility... surely tightening the timings will counteract that stability?
still, you could give cas 2 @ 333mhz a try and run memtest86 for a few hours, see what happens, maybe bump the voltage up to 2.7v
On 939, timings are generally worth more than mhz. If you can get it running CAS2 I reckon the performance difference wouldn't be noticeable. I doubt you're going to find any comparison. So suck it and see, the worst that can happen is you'll need to reset the CMOS.
you would think, but sems to be a limitation on the amount of sides of ram the proccy can use at 400 (6 from what i gather, and 4 sticks of double sided is 8, too many). but whatever the reason is its definetly locked at pc2700, soooooooo.. no use speculating about it really.
im going to try running at CAS2 then, any of the other memory settings worth looking at in this situatuion?

Make sure your command rate is set to 1T. That timing is more important than the CL
it was but i changed it to two when i ran into the 2700 thing for the first time. i shall make sure i put it back tho ta
