General Raid question

Having once losing all my data (rasid 0) when my motherboard failed im interested about raid security.
Question if I have say a raid 1 (mirrored) installation and the bit with the controller failed can I take one of the hard drives out and read all the data on another PC?
Is there any other raid configs that allow this?

it depends highly on the controller. most will allow you to do this but have a play first.

1. setup mirrored array
2. install operating system
3. turn off raid in controller
4. try to access install

That wont be easy as I havent chosen my NAS device yet.
What im looking for is a gigabit, vista compatable, NAS unit with two 500GB mirrored drives which should the unit fail I dont lose data.
