    Artificats and Crashing

    Hi,

Switched on my pc today and upon loading WoW it crashed....and was forced to restart. Restarting i tried opening wow again and it loaded for a few seconds but with artefacts and then crashed again...

I tried 3dmark and it crashes straight away then had a BSOD and it automatically restarted....

Everything was fine last night before i turned it off....

My GFX card is a BFG 8800GTX OC (they oc it not me)

Timing are set manually to stock, cpu is not overclocked. Running XP

I did not install any new hardware or software and drivers are up-to-date

Please if anyone can help as im so confused on whats going on....

PS. Rest of my system specs are available under "MY System" bit on the side

Sounds like the drivers got corrupted, uninstall them and also run Driver Cleaner Pro to completly get rid of them and then re-install the drivers

When drivers are fully uninstalled i get no artifacts anywhere...I even played a bit of counterstrike and didn’t crash or get artifacts whereas I did before. Now as soon as I installed a new download of nvidias latest drivers as soon as the installation refreshes my screen it comes back...

    What now?

I had a similar problem with an XFX GPU at the beginning of last year, it could be a faulty GPU, dude.

Check that the temperature levels are reasonable as in nowhere near 90c+, my GPU under load only hits about 65c and idles at 35c.

If yous are WAY higher than mine, even though I have a 7900GT its still worth assuming that a temp of 90c+ is a tad too high even if 115c is the advertised max temperature.

What's the driver version that came with the card?
And what's the driver version you've tried from the Nvidia website?

scan are pretty reasonable mate and it does sound very much like a faulty GFX card so it definately worth getting in touch with them

I have got nearly the exact same setup as yourself and mine works fine, so there are no incompatabilities in the hardware.
However, I have got one setting different to yourself and I have a strange feeling that this might solve the artifacting problem for yourself.

In the BIOS, in 'jumperfree configuration', I have manually set my "pci-e frequency" to 103. When overclocking cards, when artifacts appear most people increase their pci-e frequency slightly and then the artifacts disappear. The default pci-e frequency value is 100. However, it is perfectly safe to go up to 120 without any problems and is common practice. Raising the pci-e frequency too much can not kill your card or anything bad like that, if it is set too high and you get stability problems, you can just decrease it again without any detrimental effect.

I recommend that you manually set it to 120 and then check if you still get the artifacting. If the artifacting stops, then you can try lower values for the pci-e freq. Keep lowering the value until you start to get artifacts again, and then I would set the setting manually 2 values above this value to make sure the artifacts dont appear again.

Please post back if it works or not

    Good luck

Actually BFG have overclocked the card for him as he bought the 8800gtx OC edition. Basically the same as doing it yourself, but looks liek BFG overclocked it slightly too much and dint check it properly to notice the artifacting.

Thanks Biscuit and Sitalchauhan for your help. just spoke to scan and they will collect the card tommorow.

How long does it normally take roughly? I know it depends if they can replicate the problem but would be nice to know how logn it took GOT SOME SERIOUS WOW'IN TO DO!

I might also tell them to make sure its a newer batch of the BFG cards.
