Compaq TFT not working! Any ideas?

Hi, I have just been asked to look at a Compaq TFT for a friend that refuses to show anything.

There is power going to it, but the LED goes out after a few seconds as if it has not detected a source. The monitor does not even light up, so I suspect that it is the back light - can these be replaced? I have heard so, but not sure where from...

    Any ideas?

It could be the backlight or the inverter that drives the backlight. If it is warranty, RMA it. If it is out of warranty contact Compaq to see if they do a repair service. It might be that it is Compaq 'Badge engineered' and that someone else built it - you can discover that from either the label or a Google search. Contacting the original mfr may be useful.

There are companies that sell replacement backlights, but changing that yourself might be very difficult.

Is it going into standby even when there is a computer connected to it? If so then it may be something more than the backlight. If not, and you can see a shadowy image when looking at it from an angle, or the display falshes briefly, then it will be the backlight or the backlight inverter.

Can you confirm that there is graphics being output from the PC by using another monitor? In my experience, when the monitor shows nothing and goes into "standby" mode after a few moments, it is normally because there is nothing being sent to it from the computer.

I did one for a mate, turned out to be the inverter, with the cost of new tft's it's not worth fixing, I only did this one because I have plenty of time and enjoyed doing it, and my mate got a cheap s/hand inverter.
